Storyline:
Early Life: Valerie was born in a decently well-off family in New Orleans to an overzealous preacher and his wife. Valerie however wasn't the good Christian child their parents wanted; whenever they were forced to read the Bible, they would ask questions that their father didn't have the answer to. Whenever they visited another church, Valerie would interrupt the person speaking telling them they were wrong if the speaker misquoted anything. Their parents got so fed up with this behaviour, that they started putting them in the 'Sin Closet', apparently, asking questions was a sin. Valerie quickly came to the conclusion that religion was a bunch of nonsense when they caught their father having an affair. Their father forced them to keep the secret, which only became easier when Valerie then caught her mother also having an affair. Valerie couldn't stand the awkward dynamic and home and spent every waking moment at their grandmother's house, which made much more sense to Valerie
Little Witchling: For the next few years, Valerie lived with her maternal grandmother and it was the complete opposite of living with their parents. Rather than taking Valerie to church every Sunday, Nana Charlie took Valerie to what their parents called the 'Sinner' side of town. Realistically, it was just the side of town that had crystal shops and museums that taught classes on how to make poppets. Nana Charlie was an active voodoo practitioner and taught Valerie the basics of the practice. Valerie never quite picked it up, however, opting for a more generalized practice. Valerie enjoyed life much better with their grandmother; Nana Charlie never scolded them for saying 'shoot', let them watch the Sci-Fi channel, and never called Valerie a 'little piggy' for taking seconds. All of it suddenly stopped, however, when their grandma suddenly had a heart attack and had to be taken to the hospital while Valerie was sent back to their parents. Nana Charlotte sadly passed away a few days later and Valerie's parents were not happy when they found out what their child had been learning. Nana Charlotte was buried within a week with no funeral service and Valerie was banned from visiting the grave, as well as having all their witchcraft materials burned.
Circus Life: Valerie was banned from practicing or even speaking about what their grandmother had taught them. Valerie somehow didn't listen to their parent's warning while taking it too seriously at the same time. They stopped speaking to their parents entirely but continued practicing with what they had on hand. They had entered their teenage years and had come to the conclusion that anything would be better than living with their parents. They decided to petition the goddess Isis, asking for protection from their parents. During the petitioning, however, their parents barged in, and seeing the candles and ancient symbols led their parents to think Valerie was trying to summon a demon. Valerie was promptly thrown out of the house, along with their 'devil worshipping' material. After wandering the street for a few weeks, Valerie was picked up by a travelling circus. The circus was both a blessing and a curse since no one cared what Valerie did religiously, but they were treated like an attraction rather than a person. Valerie was able to expand their magical skills while travelling, mostly with their fire ability; being able to literally breathe fire, their hair being able to burst into flames and being able to be set on fire without getting hurt. Valerie was often paid pennies if anything at all while with the circus, so in order to feed themself and some of the kids, they started to steal. During other acts, they would sneak around the stands where the audience was and use their magic to 'lift' jewelry and money from wealthy spectators. They started looking for a way out of the circus and a few years later, when they were almost eighteen, they found their chance and they took it.
New York, New Self: While touring in New York, Valerie ran afoul of a spectator they were trying to steal from. The spectator was a middle-aged woman by the name of Florance Zimmerman. Rather than going to the authorities and reporting the attempted theft, Florance confronted Valerie directly. It didn't take long for Florance to figure out Valerie's motive and offer them an alternative; to come live with her. Valerie hesitated at first, but when Florance discloses that she too is a witch, they were sold on the idea. Valerie was very uncomfortable at first, being allowed to live in the house of the woman they tried to rob made them uneasy. But Florence let it be known that Valerie was welcome by making them cookies, going on walks together and offering to buy them new clothes since all Valerie had were hand-me-downs. Valerie eventually warmed up to Florance, as well as her husband Johnathan.
Uhhhh: Valerie eventually got accepted into a magical school in New York and the school was too far away to continue living with Florance and Johnathan. They thankfully found a room for rent and their life would soon be turned upside down. They made their first real friends in their whole life; Halley and Damien. They stayed in the rental room until they finished their schooling and were able to get a job closer to home. They moved back with their now adoptive mother and father and were saving up to buy a house, happy that they were getting their life back on track. After a few months of losing contact with Damien, he suddenly contacted them, asking if they and Halley wanted to meet his brother. Interested, Valerie agreed, little did they know, meeting this mystery man would help improve their life even more.
Sweet Little Life: Valerie met Ivan, Damien's brother, and the two hit it off right away. Valerie was flattered at Ivan's courting and the two eventually started dating. Valerie had never seriously dated anyone before, and the rocky start Ivan made them consider abandoning the practice. With some coaching and encouragement from both of their parents, Ivan and Valerie managed to sort out their communication issues. After the first few hiccups, Valerie found themself head over heels for Ivan and eventually started hoping for the day he would put a ring on their finger. Ivan did eventually propose and Valerie of course said yes. A few years later, after much thought and consideration, Valerie decided they were ready to have a kid. A few months later, their daughter Nikita was born. There was something about raising a child in a loving supportive household that felt like a final 'screw you' to Valerie's birth parents. Several years later, Nikita brought home an orphaned girl named Kiran. Knowing the hardships and danger of being alone on the street, Valerie instantly welcomed the girl into their home and after convincing Ivan, adopted her. After being able to grow old with their husband and kids, Valerie decided they wanted to hang onto what they had for as long as they could. They turned to vampirism like their husband, living a long eternal life with the perfect family.
