Nothing lasts forever. Time flies and people grow apart. Alex and Jackie started spending more time with their friends outside the building. Big sister's love for Bollywood channels grew stronger. After doing her homework and chores she'd sit and watch TV for the remainder of the day. Like that, the gang was seperated. Yes, we'd still have great times in the park and at the beach. The both of us would lie down and observe the evening sky after an incredible day. But the group games we played with the younger kids weren't as fun as when my cousins were around. Also the Buthelezi's moved out which made it a total bummer.
I remember the first time we had a 'Time capsule'. It was one late afternoon when we had Weatbix while watching Maleficent. We've watched movies before but something felt different. Maybe it was the dimness in the room that gave off a cinematic mood or the sensation we got when Maleficent got her wings back, right at the moment when we thaught she was going to die. She almost cried when Maleficent kissed Princess Aurora right before she woke up from her curse. We shared a chocolate to savour that moment.
We were movie geeks ever since. Singing to Cleo and Deus's duet song while standing on the living room couches. We were wizards long before we heard about 'Wolvesbain' and 'Vervain'. And eager to find out who a banshee really is. We've been through The Maze Runner's chilling adventures and joined the acapella group called 'The Bellas' after realising that East High isn't really on the map. We made a stop at The Addams Family home before going Back To The Future.
There are many more entertainment that lie in this small dark space. We'd keep ourselves cosy under her red check blanket while eating our wierd treats. Treats that suit our tastebuds like our classic butter and Go-slos sandwiches with Fanta grape or the mayonnaise and Doritos sandwiches with Aquelle naartjie which we rarely have. Tyron called us demons before trying them himself, he loved it. We've had many more exotic combinations that make us go back to those days, like this bowl of cold custard mixed with wine gums, some Romany crisp cookies and mint chocolate that we're having while catching up with each other.
I switch my gaze away from the laptop to meet Melissa's patient gaze. We spoke over the sound of voices coming from the movie we were watching.
"Shanga said that I should surround myself with boys, that way I'll stop talking and walking like a girl." I say. "The funny how they think that I'm at my early stages when I've actually gone really deep."
"Fer'real." She utters.
"Lapho I still hadn't lost my virginity."
"Why though?" She asks, scooping another spoonful of the mixture.
"You know how hard it is to be discreet and to find someone to be in bed with?" I say. My cellphone vibrates as a notification pops up on the notification bar. I press the power button to stitch off the phone. Ignoring Jackie's text that started with 'Your dad...' I switch my attention back to Melissa. "Also, a very close friend of mine once told me if I'm going to lose my virginity it's better if I do it with someone I love."
"Wait, wait, so you're sleeping over tonight." She asks after realising the obvious.
"Hell no, I'll be here for the whole holidaaays." I say before we scream, a scream of excitement.
"Okay enough about me. You said there's something you needed to tell me in person. So, I'm here."
A few seconds of silence is observed before she says anything.
"I met someone." She says.
My phone vibrates as another text from Jackie pops up on my notification. Is this ou bored or what?
"Take that first." Melissa says.
"Nahh, go on."
"Is it Amida?" She asks. "Wait, is the rest of the fam also here?"
