I walk into an empty flat. I can think of a few reasons why I have the flat all to myself. DaMwadju is out running an errand and my other cousins are still out playing soccer. I can hear Ester and gang's voices from outside as I get into my loose clothes. The mood inside the flat is calm as evening time proceeds.
Melissa's flat was locked and Melissa didn't come by the shop to walk with me to the building like she usually does. Which meant that she was still with her new friends at their outings.
I make myself a cup of coffee and peanut butter sandwiches. I sit on the carpet with the tv remote in hand. Observing the tv stand as I wait for the tv to come on. There are two trophies on either sides of the dvd player. Both belonging to Jackie.
My cousins USB didn't have much movies on it and since Alex recently got a new laptop, there must be more movies and series in there. I scroll down the list of movies that I've already watched before. I select Storks. I don't mind watching it again. I dip the bread into the cup of coffee as the movie starts.
'I cannot run away from these childhood habits.' I smile to myself as the thaught roams my mind.
The door opens and the noise from outside enters the flat. Jackie walks into the living room with a mood and sits on the armchair. I think he's on his phone since he's not talking to me.
"Did something happen at the soccer grounds?" I asked, turning my head to look at him staring into his phone like I thaught.
"None of your business." He says Ina grumpy tone.
I just turned around to continue watching the movie.
A moment of silence intervenes.
"I'm changing this." Jackie says, rushing for the remote that lied next to me. We fight over the tv remote until he eventually grabs it from me and goes back to sit on the armchair.
"Let's watch a real show." He says victoriously.
"Yeah, let's see how the remote will work on one battery." I grin. "Who's victorious now."
"Oh really, I just need to use the batteries from the DStv remote." He laughs at me.
"Jackie!" I yell at him.
"Haaw what?"
"Just give me time with the tv then you can watch whatever it is that you want to watch my ou." I say. "An hour and a half is all I'm asking."
"Okay, fine." He agrees, switching back onto his phone. "You lucky the FIFA world cup is over or else you'd be crying."
I turned around and continued watching the movie. I couldn't sit completely comfortable. Knowing that this cousin of mine can piss me off anytime.
"You and Melissa are dating? I always see you around her. It's like you don't want her out of your sight." He asks a few moments later.
"No we not." I frown. "We're just best friends."
"But tell me. You'll smashed?"
"Seriously Jackie." I say, squinting my eyes at him. "No!"
"Aah, come on. I'm your cousin. I can keep it a secret if you like."
"I'm bisexual, Jackie." I shout. "How's
that for a secret?""I know." He says briefly.
I'm amazed by his reaction at first until I lower my eyebrows in realisation. "Lies!"
I say."I'm tuning you Djimmy. I always knew you weren't that straight. I had a gut feeling about it." He says, looking into his cellphone.. "It's just the bisexual part that took me by surprise cause how can you be bi and still hadn't tapped Melissa's ass."
"Fine, Jackie, you win." I rebuked, standing in a riled up manner. "You have the tv all to yourself now."
I walk to the door. I don't bother listening to his meaningless apologies. I just leave the empty cup and plate in the kitchen and make my way to the rooftop.
Minutes later finds me on the rooftop, looking at the view of the street from above. I spot Melissa from down the road, approaching the building. We make eye contact before she reaches the gate. I don't know if she could see me but that definately tells me that she felt my gaze. I walk away from the edge of the rooftop and sit on a pile of bricks. Thinking my life through.
So one friend thinks she disappointed the other while the other friend is okay with it. As long as she's happy and for the sake of their friendship relationship. I hear a song playing from the entrance to the rooftop. The song becomes clearer as someone approaches. That someone must be Melissa since she is the one I'm expecting.
I let out a sigh of relief after looking into her eyes. She stands in front of me. Her speaker on one hand, playing Better by Khalid, and a packet of nibbles on the other. She sure knows my weaknesses. She takes a seat right next to me.
"Wow, thanks." I say, looking into the plastic. She got me some orange juice and a piece of chocolate cake. At least she didn't forget about me. "How was it?" I ask.
She takes a deep breath out. "It was nice. Not perfect. Just nice." She says, stretching out her arm and placing it around my shoulder. "Hey, you gotta let her go." She smiles.
Okay, what the hell is happening. I frown at her. Trying to figure out what she's saying.
"I know, it's gonna hurt a little bit when you do but you're gonna be okay." Her smile grows brighter. Okay now she's really trying to tell me something.
My frown fades the second I realise where she mimicked these lines from. A smile crept on my face which grew into a laughter. She laughs as well. "Nahh." We say to each other and get into a hug.
"I miss you." She mumbles over my shoulder.
"I miss you too." I say. "Also, I think I need to watch Ralph breaks the internet again."
She laughs and we move away from each other. We stay seated on the bricks for the remainder of the song. It's a calm moment. Just the two of us listening to a slow song as time passes by. Nothing feels better than this.
She looks at me and says.
"Let's go to uShaka."
