Introduction
"If you had one day to live, what would you do?"... I closed my eyes and didn't feel a thing...
It's funny how content we think we are as time drifts on by? On average, we spend approximately thirty seven percent of our life sleeping, five percent watching the television or sitting in traffic and twenty nine percent working.
Is this how you want to live or have you been unwittingly placed in this situation? More importantly, can you do anything about it?
We are cursed to obey a system of rules that the rich and powerful in society has placed upon us. This system is everything and everywhere in society. It's something that few question. It's the bureaucratic nonsense, the political spiel, the rules we obey, how we live and what we do. It is why your life is controlled and managed in the way that it is.
This system is built on greed and this has resulted in the exploitation of the planet and its resources. For the establishment to maintain their status and power this is a crucial necessity. The problem with absolute power is that it always leads to corruption. That is why we now face such dire consequences and perhaps our darkest hour. I am ashamed to say that I have worked to maintain and protect these powerful people for as long as I can remember.
I suppose that was why a revolutionary alternative came to be. Every level of society had turned to corruption in their eyes. Issues on matters relating to politics, ethics, science, human rights, the environment, war, religion, economics, energy and everything else in between were wrong or were being exploited to fuel certain agendas. No one had any solutions. Revolution was the only answer and climate change was used as their rallying cry.
Unfortunately, we began to realise that our reckless pollution of the planet and unsustainable population growth had not only put our own race in jeopardy, but practically every species of plant, animal and mineral with it.
You see, we have become a plague to this earth and it has now come to the stage where the balance has been tipped and become irreversible.
To be honest, I didn't notice the changes or I convinced myself that I didn't. Poor people had already started to feel the brunt of what was beginning to happen, but few believed it would occur so quickly and those who did were never heard. It was suggested that with these changes there would be economic collapse, war, increasing amounts of refugees, poverty and starvation. The rich, cunning and ruthless would survive, but the bulk of people would face dire circumstances.
Large super powers would invade smaller countries to gain natural resources like oil, but financing these wars would become far more difficult. Russia, China, India, Brazil, Europe and the US would grow more wary and suspicious of each other and races over technology and the threat of nuclear war would come to the fore.
It was predicted that temperatures would rise, ice caps would melt and deserts would expand. Life in Africa, including human life would all but cease. Poverty stricken people in Asia would have to fight for their survival. In Europe, the Gulf Stream would change due to vast quantities of ice melting in the Arctic, which would cause a freeze in some regions yet warm others. Refugees from Africa would be turned away as Europe attempted to deal with its own problems of fresh water shortages and rising sea levels.
America would face a similar plight and low lying areas like Louisiana and Florida would have to be evacuated. Unpredictable weather, both north and south would cause further problems as would a growing tension with other powerful nations.
Russia, like the United States had an abundance of resources, but they knew China and its massive population was looking enviously towards these riches, particularly the water supply at Lake Baikal. In a world with more people and less clean water, China was prepared to allow many of its citizens to die for such rewards.
This is the bleak vision that they had of what might happen and I was as guilty as all those who had done nothing to stop or prevent it. It was a scenario that was possible. Ominously, these predicted events were beginning to happen with greater frequency, but I had refused to notice these changes that were beginning to creep up upon us all.
Of course, the conservative, powerful and rich wanted to ignore the scientific evidence. They had spent hundreds of years creating the system that we had today and the global warming issue was something that could offset change.
On the other hand, those who opposed this group used the situation to create panic. Some wanted not only to answer the climate issue, but to create a new global society. They wanted to change the world and bring the whole system down by any means possible.
There were some people who just didn't know, didn't believe, didn't care or only wanted slight alterations to the system of rule. Events had started to unfold and life as we knew it would change for better or worse.
Had we acted too late? Were we caught up in our own world too much to realise that this change had to occur?
That's when I realised that I was as culpable as the rest. I was one of those who had done nothing, even though I was in a position to do something.
