It felt like ten years had passed even though it was only one. I was stood in the kitchen getting ingredients ready to bake cookies.
"So how do you make cookies then."
I had taken months of Miraak nagging me, trying and failing to persuade me to show him how to bake cookies and finally and reluctantly I had given in.
"Well first of all you mix in the sugar and the butter." I placed the sugar and butter in a wooden bowl and handed Miraak a spoof to mix them. He just held the bowl in his had and looked down at its contents as if he had no idea what to. Then he started to mix.
I continued to measure out the other ingredients.
"So Alye, are we going to talk about how you tried to make cookies with potions in them the other day and made Bran invisible."
"I don't know what you are talking about." I replied jokingly.
"Oh come on. How else would something invisible run into my bedroom, lick me and then run of with my shoe."
"I have no idea." I laughed. "You didn't tell me he had run off with your shoe."
"Well yes, it was quite amusing to see my shoe float down stairs and then fly out the garden."
I burst out laughing. "Is that butter and sugar mixed yet."
"I don't know." He showed me the bowl and I could see that to my surprise he had actually done a good job of mixing it together.
"Right now for the flour and the eggs."
"Why don't you put in the flour and eggs first."
"Because that's not what the recipe says." With that I took a small pinch of flour and threw it at his face jokingly.
Is I looked up I could see that it was more than a pinch that I threw because his face was covered in it.
"I'll get you for that." He then proceeded to throw the flour in my face as well. I blinked a few times and I could feel it falling of my eyelashes.
"Hay."
"You did it first. Anyway now you look like a cute angry little ghost."
I rolled my eyes finding it rather funny on the inside. "Let's just get back to baking."
It didn't take long for the mismatched cookies to be baking in the oven and for us to be huddled under a blanket on the couch by the fire.
"Miraak, what are you reading."
"Just a book, it's about someone that lives on the moon."
"I think I can smell the cookies."
We both went out to the kitchen and I crouched down in front of the oven and pulled out the trey. "They are a little burnt but I think they will still taste good." I said.
"Okay you go back to the living room and I'll bring them in on a plate."
"Sure." I went into the living room and sat back down on the couch. I picked up Miraak's book and flickered through the pages. I had to admit that the book did seem interesting.
After a few minutes Miraak walked in with the plate of cookies and just as I was about to reach for the first cookie I saw that right in the middle of the plate on the top cookie was a ring.
"Miraak..."
"I know it's crazy and it might seem sodden." He got down on one knee. "Alye will you marry me?"
"I...I yes, yes yes."
Then Miraak took the ring of the plate, took my hand and slid it onto my finger.
I stood up and jumped, wrapping my arms around his neck and my legs around his waist.
"I love you Miraak, more that I have loved anyone."
"I love you too." As I said it five visions flashed through my head. A golden bat wing. A tear drop running through a bloodied face. A green mask. A stab wound. A silver ring. Suddenly I felt a familiarity about those images.
"Miraak did you just see..."
"Yeah."
"Do you remember each and every one of those moments?"
"Yes and I remember seeing those visions on the day where we met properly."
I pulled my head back to look him in the eyes. "We saw our future that day and we didn't even know."
"I think that means that we are definitely mates." He smirked.
"I love you, you idiot."
"I love you."
