I sighed, and checked myself, once again, in the mirror. I was wearing a nice dress - a bit plain, long and red, but nice, flattering.
"We don't need boys," Ginny declared, sweeping into the room in her gorgeous minty gown.
"Although you have one," I said a bit bitterly, slouching in comparison to my straight-backed, confident friend.
"Yeah, well... you know," she said, deflating a bit.
I did know. Neville certainly wasn't the guy of Ginny's dreams, unfortunately for him.
"You don't have to dance with him for the whole night," I said, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Just the slow dances, maybe, and then we can party," I grinned.
Gin smiled too, and grabbed my hand.
"Let's go," she said, and I could hear the excitement in her voice.
Ginny pulled me out of the dormitory, dragging me down the hallways until we reached the marble staircase.
"D'you think he'll be waiting?" she asked nervously.
"He'd better," I glowered.
"Okay, okay, let's go," she said, painting on a smile, and began the walk down.
It seemed so anticlimatic, and so cliche, but I sighed and followed.
I felt good - better than I had in a while, I realized as I followed my best friend. About a month ago, I had decided that I was 'off the market'. Not that I was techinally 'on the market' or whatever, considering that I was single as fuck, but I was now single by choice.
Although, a small, secret part of me was hoping that my longtime crush, Draco Malfoy, would ask me to the dance. He didn't, of course, but still.
I reached the bottom of the staircase, and saw Neville swoop in and take Ginny's hand. She turned over her shoulder and I winked at her, letting Neville lead her to the dance floor.
"All alone?" said a deep voice from behind me.
"Blaise?" I asked, turning around, a surprised smile spreading across my face.
"It's been a hot sec," I said, capturing him in a brief hug.
"Yeah," he said, smiling awkwardly. Oops. Did I overstep?
"Um... yeah, I am alone," I laughed. "I mean, I'm here with Ginny, but she's actually here with Neville, so..." I shrugged, blushing a bit.
"We can walk in together," he offered.
"What?" I asked, looking up at him sharply.
"Yeah. I don't have a date either, so, we could dance a bit, if you want. As friends," he said, rubbing the back of his neck.
Was he a bit nervous?
"Sure... erm, well, I was actually planning on dancing with Ginny..." I said, he instantly shut down.
"No that's fine, I-"
"Blaise, let me finish," I laughed a bit, and he grinned sheepishly. "She's planning on dancing with Neville for all the slow dances, so you and me can be partners for those too," I said.
"And all the others?" he asked, stepping closer.
"Well, we could all dance together," I offered, a bit breathlessly. So much for being 'off the market'. I had a crush on his damned best friend! Did I?
