A sky red as blood

It was soon to be blood rain season. You could feel it in the air. It was getting colder, and the mist was buildings up, even in the streets. Early in the morning I was sent out by my mother to go grocery shopping, not something unusual but now that I'm trying to recall the look she gave me when saying it, I'm sure there was malice in her eyes.

The fresh air was burning in my lungs as I just left the confinement of our stuffy apartment. I remember walking through the streets, after I was about half-way there everything started to blur.

The next thing I can look back on is sitting in a field, my arms tied securely behind my back. There were candles around me, the weak heat didn't help with the wet and unpleasant grass at all. As soon as I started to pay attention to my surroundings, I noticed people standing behind me. Strangely enough, I couldn't recognize any faces. To this day, I'm convinced that I've never seen them before.

At first, I thought they were speaking some foreign language, but now I know that the spell they were casting was about to summon a deity beyond my understanding.

I was in danger, I knew that. This wasn't a normal situation.

Soon after, my arms were released, only for a second, I felt like I was in control of my body. That was before a bright flash of light entered my reign of sight. Then I was completely stiff, like I couldn't move a muscle. It was like a spell. It held me captive, and even though I was being blinded, I couldn't avert my eyes.

It felt like an eternity before the flash disappeared, and the angel that the people behind me were desperately awaiting showed itself. It was gradually getting closer.. and closer.. and closer.. closer to me. I felt fear in every fiber of my being and the chill that ran down my spine dug itself into my bones.

Fear is one of the best and worst qualities of a person. It can help you survive. And it did.

The angel was now close enough to me that I started to notice its details. Its pure white feathers adorned the wings it was made of, and I felt every single of the way too many eyes staring at me, drilling through my body and into my soul. It was the most vulnerable I ever felt. I wanted to run, or at least turn away. Close my eyes and hope that this day won't be my last, but I couldn't.

My body was so stiff that I almost felt like I would break. Every second of staring at this thing, my panic got more prominent. I felt it burning inside of me, unfiltered fear. The heat was running through my veins and pooling in my stomach, a stark contrast to the freezing night breeze. My body was boiling, almost burning until suddenly, my blood ran cold.

At that moment, every noise was drowned out. My eyes fixated on the being in front of me, and everything else fell into a blurry background. My body stopped shivering and tensing up. Instead, I stretched up. Instead of running, which would've probably been a better idea, I got closer to the angel.

So close, I could feel its feathers on my arm, cutting and burning my skin all at once. At least, that's what it felt like.

When I reached up high enough to wrap my fingers around its halo, it felt like blades digging into my hands. It was a sharp pain, but I didn't let go. I couldn't.

Instead, I gripped it harder. Edges digging deep in my flesh and making blood drip, slowly trailing down the monsters feathers and building a pool on the wet grass.

The pain was excruciating, to say the least, I was honestly waiting on the moment the halo tore off my fingers. But instead of pulling away, I tightened my fingers as much as I could. The adrenaline was steadily moving through my body with every fastened pump my heart gave, making all the built up energy flow into my hand.

It was worth it, at last. The relief I felt when the halo shattered in my hand was immense. I was brought back to reality by an ear piercings screech, a noise that was nearly as painful as my hand.
