Chapter 13

Alice, Jasper, and Janus gracefully and swiftly climb from their car, place themselves in proximity, just in case. Jacob is confronting Edward about what happened during the chase. Sam already told Janie about Paul and Emmett's disagreement and Janie is giving him a silent treatment for a while to make him wither.

"Tell me what?" Bella asks in reference to something Jacob had said.

"Emmett and Paul had a misunderstanding, there is nothing to worry about," Edward claims.

"Listen to you," Jacob says bitterly. "Did you lie to get her out of town, too?"

"You should leave. Now," Edward warns.

"She has a right to know. She is the one the red-head wants," Jacob retorts.

It's true. Victoria doesn't give a crap about Janie. She only wants Bella because she's the reason that her mate, James, is dead.

"Victoria?" Bella frowns. "Alices's vision..." she looks at Edward.

"I was trying to protect you," Edward claims.

"By lying to me," Bella says in disbelief.

"Okay."

"We're gonna talk about this," Bella says and she turns to Jacob, "but... You. Why haven't you called me back?"

"I had nothing to say," Jacob claims.

"Well, I have tons," Bella says and she goes to follow Jake to ride with him to La Push but Edward stops. "You have to trust me," she says.

"I do trust you. It's him I don't trust," Edward says.

Bella just looks at Edward; strong, independent, not about to acquiesce. Finally he releases her. She jogs to Jacob. Climbs on the back of his bike. Jacob grins.

"You upset Janie," Edward says when Bella's on Jacob's bike. "When you brought me to Jacksonville to see your mother instead of her. She misses her, too." With that, he turns and walks inside.

Bella looks at Janie, who won't look at her as she pesters Jasper. The vampire suddenly throws her over his shoulder, making the girl shriek and giggle as he carries her. Alice giggles happily and she follows them.

Bella will admit, when she got the second ticket, she didn't even think about Janie. She thought about Edward and she wanted Edward to meet Renee.

After school, Janie goes to her locker and her envelope falls. She picks it up.

From your best friend it reads. Janie sees Jasper watching from down the hall when she looks up and she looks back at the envelope before opening it. They're tickets to go to Florida... Jacksonville. Janie smiles softly and she closes her locker. When Jasper appears beside her, she hugs him and thanks him before they leave the high school.

Janie goes to La Push and she goes to the pack house. She shows Paul the tickets Jasper bought for her so she can go see Renee soon.

"When are you going to go?" Paul asks gently.

"Soon but I don't know yet," Jamie says.

"It'll be good for you to see her," Paul says and Janie nods.

"I miss her," Janie says. "I haven't seen my mother since me and Bella moved to Forks last year."

Paul places a kiss on the top of Janie's head and she curls into him deeper. Paul sees the guys and he nods. They all (Jared, Embry, Seth, and Jake) run over and pile on them. Janie squeals under them and Sam watches from the door. They move so that Paul can tickle Janie. She laughs hard until she lets out a snort. Paul can't help but laugh at it and he shakes his head at the group. He thinks Leah would enjoy this if she hadn't ran off when he got here.

"She's human but she's part of the pack, isn't she?" Emily asks as she appears beside her fiancée and he wraps his arm around her.

"Yeah," Sam replies. "Yeah, she is. I wonder if she'll ever get with Paul."

"Don't rush them, Sam," Emily scolds. "They're starting off at friends so Janie can wrap her head around everything."

"She seems fine," Sam claims.

"So did I," Emily says, "but you didn't know I was until I came around. Don't rush it. If Paul is willing to go at Janie's pace, let him."

"God, that noise!" Paul barks out. "So adorable."

Janie blushes and she hides her face in her hands, embarrassed. Paul and the guys all chuckle at her discomfort. They can't help it.

"You're so cool," Seth Clearwater gushes.

"How's your dad doing?" Janie asks.

Seth smiles. "He's resting, he's letting mom fill in for him on the council until he's 100%. He's at a 75% right now."

"Heart attacks that big, patients usually don't survive," Janie says. "Harry's strong."

"It's our elders that kept him alive," Sam says. "That's all that can be said about it."

Janie smiles. She agrees with that. Janie hangs out with the pack for a while before she goes home. She chose Charlie what Jasper got her and he's glad. He grounded Bella because she forgot to think about Janie when she brought Edward to Jacksonville.

Janie goes upstairs and she lays in her bed, texting Paul.
