"Hey Shu? Do you mind grabbing me salt?" I call out to my boyfriend. As I hear his footsteps approaching, I turn my attention to the meat cooking on our stove. The machine was faulty, and rarely worked, so I wanted to make as much as I could of the opportunity.
I tried to keep a sense of normalcy, but my life had changed so drastically in the last few months. A deadly virus had spread across the world, leaving brain dead monsters in its wake. There were some survivors, and even some immune people. I was one of the few who were unaffected by the disease, but zombies could easily still kill me.
I hear the floorboards creak, and turn to face Shuichi. In a small shelter like this, it was almost impossible not to hear him.
"Do you have it?" I question, taking in his pale face. He chews on his lip as I ask him, clearly anxious.
"Well..." He began. "We're out. What you're cooking now is all we have."
I feel like the breath has been knocked out of me. Already? We had just found new materials in a raid two weeks ago. It was becoming harder to keep our strength, but certainly we hadn't used that much? I turn off the stove, and place my hands on my hips.
"That supermarket a few blocks away might have a few resources." Shuichi mentions. "It's mostly boarded up though."
I can barely contain my excitement. If the boards were still intact, there had to be something in there. I cross the kitchen in a few steps, and grab a coat flung over a chair. "You ready to go?" I question him. He offers a small smile in return and flings open our door. I step out, and begin jogging to our destination. Shuichi is beside me, and as I feel myself tiring from the short distance, he slows his pace to match mine. I grab his hand for a moment and squeeze it once, to show my gratitude. When we reach the front doors, I immediately realize something's off.
"You hear that Shu?" I whisper. Inside the building you could make out the faint sound of footsteps. He nods at me once and we prepare to bust in the door. Mentally, I count down and then throw myself at the door. The wood splinters and cracks, but the door eventually creaks open. I turn around to marvel at the rows of supplies in the building.
I hear a yell from behind me, and I frantically turn to see a zombie gripping Shuichi. I attempt to sprint toward him, but before I can do anything, the zombie closes his rotting teeth on Shuichi's flesh. I kick the zombie's leg, knocking it off completely. As the zombie hobbles away to retrieve its leg, I tug Shuichi's arm and drag him out of the building.
Our pace back home gradually slows down as the symptoms start to set in. Shuichi already starts to struggle to walk, and all the life seems to be drained from his face. Tears wet my face as I realize he doesn't have much longer.
"Shu, I don't know if you can hear me, but I love you, okay? I'm so sorry I can't fix you but I'll do whatever I can to help." I sob.
Shuichi's eyes are blank, and a milky white color seems to coat them as we finally arrive in our shelter.
Throughout all of this, he had kept me going, and now I really had nothing to live for. I knew what I had to do.
I turn to lock the door behind us, and then face Shuichi's hunched over form. When he hears me, a small grunt leaves his lips as he shuffles my direction. I loosen the top of my shirt and wait for him to close the distance.
He leans in, his rotten breath ghosting over my skin. I brace for a bite- but instead he waits there. I pause, confusion filling my mind. I fully meant for him to kill me. Afterall, if my death meant he survived, even in zombie form, I was willing to do it. Instead he waited patiently, and I stepped back.
"Shu?" My words hang in the air as I search for any sign I got through to him. Slowly, he raises his head and cocks it to the side. I shriek at the revelation, overjoyed that a small part of him might still be in there.
"It's okay Shu, I promise, I'll take care of you." I proclaim.
I lead him over to the half cooked meat I had abandoned on the stove. He pauses, and I nod.
Without a second thought he dove in, devouring the meat with his bare hands. When it was gone, a blissful look covered his face, and it was almost enough to make me cry again.
The terrifying idea of losing him was gone, and I knew somewhere in there, Shu was still taking care of me. But even then, our lives had been forever altered.
I decided right then and there that I would find a cure. No matter what sacrifices I needed to make. Until then, I would savor the few pieces of my boyfriend remaining in this undead body.
