CHAPTER 43: The Beginning of the End [Part 2]

Down in the city, chaos ruled. The soldiers of SKEF, the adventurers, mercenaries, and even the present members of the UN and JSDF tried to hold back these things flooding out from the sewers with little success.

"Covering fire! Covering fire!"

"Damn! It's useless! Our bullets were just passing through those things!" Shino cursed, pulling the pin from her grenade and throwing it.

Grenades were a little more useful since they stunned these slime things for the time being — at least until they gathered themselves again — but made not much difference due to the sheer mass headed towards their direction.

The third recon team — previously under Itami's command — was ordered to station in the city, help with the humanitarian effort and protect the local embassy. Yet, now they had to fight for their survival.

"Who thought it would end like this?"

Shino gritted her teeth as she covered the mortar team.

It is supposed to be an easy assignment — Not getting messed up with the border disputes or even the hunt after that demon emperor. It all sounded good enough. Some humanitarian service also looks well in her service record.

Who thought an army appears out of nowhere and starts to storm the city?

"Dammit!"

If this was not bad enough, according to some rumors, Hill Arnus was also under attack.

"We haven't heard any rumors from them ever since yesterday." She feared the worst happened to them.

"Damn! That can't be possible! That place is a damn fortress! Surrounded by a vast minefield, reinforced walls, and firepower that can take out armies getting in a mile radius."

After the ambassadors visited the Sorcerous Kingdom, the place was reinforced even more. More soldiers and equipment were brought through from Earth to prepare their fortification for a possible assault.

"Probably those shitty politicians shitting their pants." Yeah, she saw the videos of that place. Compared to them, the Empire was a harmless baby.

"Cover me! Reloading!" She shouted, dismissing such thoughts. No! She can't think about this now! She needs to concentrate on this battle, or she dies!

*************

"Guah!"

"Hold a little longer!" Inside the protected building, Mari Kurokawa and her team tried their best to tend to the injured brought there.

"So many injured!" All with injuries caused by some kind of strong acid. Many missing limbs melted away like they were made from butter which encountered intense heat.

"I never saw an acid injury so serious before." It was like they were digested alive at the moment those things touched them.

"We need more water here!"

Since coming here, Mari knew, the healers the Sorcerous Kingdom employed probably can heal these people fully under a moment — even giving their limbs back as she saw a few times.

Yet, they were a limited resource.

As she read, they can use their healing powers only limited times a day. This meant that once they run out of their daily limit, they will be forced to resort to other means to tend these people.

"Which means they will be a lot less efficient."

That's why she remained with her team of trained medics and did not flee to the closest shelter. To save as many as she can while making the nearby healers spare their charges on more serious cases.
