Brenna's POV
I never understood cliff divers. People who willingly stand at the edge of danger, take a deep breath and jump. They know how many ways this could go wrong, but it is the fear itself that beckons them over the edge. I never understood the appeal, why this ridiculous activity had so many people addicted, but now I get it.
People jump to feel the fall.
The feeling of the wind surrounding you, your heart beating so heavily it is sure to burst out of your chest. Nothing is holding you back. Nothing can stop you. Nothing is even holding you to the earth. You are truly free.
This is the ecstasy I feel every time I am with Driver. Every time I am near him I stop thinking and I feel myself falling further and further, but once I leave his presence I crash back down to the surface.
Maybe I should just take up cliff diving, it would be safer.
"What are you thinking about?" Brody asks as I zip up my small overnight bag. Tonight is Friday, which means I have a fight, but more importantly, this is the night I promised to stay with Driver. To say I'm nervous is an understatement, but more than that I'm confused.
"Nothing," I say, trying to brush it off.
"You forget we are made of the same DNA? I know you better than that."
"We are fraternal, we are not made of the same DNA," I say, once again trying to dodge the conversation.
"Do you want to tell me what's going on or do you want me to guess?"
"Oh great, a fucking guessing game is exactly how I want to spend my time," I say, sarcasm lacing my voice.
"You are trying to figure out when to run away from him."
How the fuck does he do that?! We are twins, sure, but this is fucking weird.
"No, I'm not," I lie.
"You're a bad liar."
"I am not."
"Brenna, just fucking talk to me. I mean, Driver doesn't sound like a bad guy."
"I don't need relationship advice from - wait, how the fuck do you know his name?" I question as I realize what he just said to me.
"My little sister is going out with a strange man I haven't met. You're crazy if you think I didn't look into him," he defends.
"So what? You went through my phone?" I question as anger bubbles in my voice.
"Sure did, and I reversed searched his number: Mr. Kade Roberson, 31, born in Savannah, Georgia."
"You are fucking crazy!"
"As my twin, you should know that by now."
"So what, just because you ran a background check doesn't mean you know him."
"No, but I do know you and you wouldn't be so hung up on him if he was an asshole."
"You're right."
"What did you just say?" he asks with a smile.
"Don't make me say it again, asshole," I say in a playful tone.
"So why are you jumping ship if he walks on water and shit?"
"You know why," I defend.
"Brenna, not every man is like Joey," he says in a softer voice.
"I know that, but I have Hazel now. I have to put her first," I say as a knot forms in my stomach. Just the mention of his name makes my skin crawl.
"So what? He doesn't want kids?" he questions as the blood rushes to my cheeks.
