Brenna's POV
Warm water flows over my hands as I wash dishes from tonight's dinner. I offered to clean up while Brody played with Hazel so I could have time to think. Driver texted and asked if I want to hang out after the fight tonight and even though I quickly agreed, I feel uneasy about it. We have seen each other every single day this week, and we text all of the time. It feels good to be with him, to have somebody besides Hazel that makes me smile, but I have to remind myself to push him away. Keeping him at arm's length is the only way to protect everyone in this situation. Driver will not want a kid. I don't want to open Hazel up to the heartbreak of losing another father figure. So, the farther I push him away now, the less it will hurt when we inevitably fizzle out.
I can enjoy what is happening now because I realize there is an expiration date on this. Sure, it's a gray area, but nothing in life is simple.
"That's the cleanest that pot will ever be," Brody says, which snaps me back to reality. I must've been washing this pot for a solid 5 minutes.
"Sorry, I'm just tired," I reply as I try to brush it off. I hate lying to him, but I do not want him to make this bigger than it is.
"Then you don't need to fight tonight."
"Not that tired, I'm good now. In fact, I need to leave a little early so at 7:30 we are going to tell Hazel it's bedtime," I reply because I intend to apologize to Smoke before the fight tonight. I need that off my conscious.
"You coming home straight after?"
"I'm not sure yet. If you don't mind staying with Hazel, I may have plans tonight."
"You gonna tell me who he is?" he asks with a raised eyebrow.
"Who, who is?" I question, trying to play dumb.
"The guy you've been fucking."
Oh fuck, okay, here we go.
"I really don't want to talk about this with my brother," I reply. Brody and I are closer than most, but not that close.
"Oh my God Bren, you're not a virgin?!" He says in an exaggerated voice with his hand on his heart.
"Oh that's right, the three-year-old CHILD in the living room was my first clue," he finishes and I start laughing in response.
"Point taken," I laugh.
"So who is he?"
"Just a guy from the ring,"
"As in the DRH ring?" he questions with wide eyes.
"Yeah?" I reply but it sounds more like a question. He was happy when I started fighting for DRH and now he sounds like he is judging them.
"You gonna bring Hazel in that life?"
"Who said anything about Hazel?" I defend as anger bubbles in me.
"Calm down, I'm just asking how much you have thought this through?"
"What are you even talking about?"
"How far ahead have you thought?"
"How far ahead?" I echo, "just to the next orgasm." This conversation took a left turn really quickly. It sounds like he is trying to plan my wedding to Driver right now.
"Okay, I'm not going to push, but I know you, Bren. Sometimes I think I know you better than you know yourself."
"Please Brody, tell me what you think you know about me that I don't even know?"
