Hey babes! Here is a short, fluffy update so y'all can recover from the darkness that happened in the last chapter hahaha. Also, I have finally figured out who will star in book 3..... any guesses?????
Driver's POV
One step at a time. One step in the right direction, that's all I can do lately, but I think that's enough. This is just another step, even though it's a huge step. It's a step that will change the course of my life forever.
Today is the day I meet Hazel. To say I'm nervous would be the understatement of the century, but now I feel ready. For the first time in forever, I feel like I can do this, that I could be a family man, because of her. When I told her my story and all its ugly parts, I was sure she would run, but she only held on tighter. Seeing her believe in me so much has helped me move forward. She has helped me see past myself and to the future.
It's been two weeks since I met Brody and kind of lost my shit, and things have been good, really good actually. Brenna brought Brody to her fight last week while she paid a babysitter to watch Hazel, and that allowed us time to clear the air. I never blamed him for what happened, it was my own scars that caused my reaction, but he apologized anyway. Both of us are extremely protective over Brenna, which drives her crazy, but neither of us can help it. That especially came out during the fight when both of us had to look away even though she ended up winning. Watching the girl you love voluntarily get hit in the face over and over again is fucking traumatizing.
Now, I stand in front of Brenna's door with sweaty hands and a gigantic teddy bear wrapped in my arms. She said I didn't have to bring anything, but I couldn't show up empty-handed, even though I'm sure I went overboard. This damn thing is so big I had to tie it on the back of my bike like a fucking passenger.
With a deep breath and a silent prayer to whatever is up there, I finally ring the doorbell. It only takes a second for the front door to open, and Brenna stands before me, looking equally as nervous. However, as soon as she sees the life-size teddy bear that is basically covering my face, she lets out a cute giggle and I see the tension release from her shoulders.
"I told you that you didn't have to bring anything," she laughs as she opens the door wider and beckons me inside.
"You think she'll like it?" I ask as the nervousness settles in my stomach once again.
"Why don't you ask her yourself?" she smiles as I try to swallow the brick that formed in my throat.
"Hazel, come in here please!" Brenna calls and soon a mini-Brenna appears in the doorway. I have seen tons of pictures of Hazel, but she is even smaller in person. Her freckles cover her entire face just like her mother, which adds to her childlike demeanor even more.
"Baby, this is mommy's friend Dr-" she starts but I interrupt her.
"Kade," I interrupt. The last thing I want is this innocent little girl calling me Driver. Over the years, it has become a name I take pride in, but it is tied to nothing but violence, something I want to keep far away from her.
"This is mommy's friend Kade," she corrects with a smile.
"Nice to meet you kiddo," I say nervously as I gesture to the teddy bear, "I brought you a friend."
"That's mine?" she asks as she hides behind Brenna's legs.
"Sure is," I reply as I bend down and place the teddy bear on the floor. Brenna warned me that she would be shy when I first met her, but she seems to be doing much better than I expected.
"Look how cool that is," Brenna says with an exaggerated voice as Hazel slowly walks toward the stuffed animal.
"Wooooowww," she says with wide eyes as she touches the bear, closely inspecting it.
