Hey guys! I'm moving into finals weeks (we have two weeks of finals instead of one) so I apologize if my updates are sporadic. However, after I'm finished I will have a week off so I hope to finish up this book soon! We are officially only TEN chapters away from the end of this book. Thank you, guys, for reading and sticking with me through my writing journey. Here is an extra-long chapter to tide you all over.

Brenna's POV

From early childhood, we are introduced to the idea of war. At first, it is simple, just little green army men we play pretend battles with. Then, the idea becomes more real when we learn of the past wars in history class. This is our first true introduction to how bloody war can actually be. In our teenage years, we are not only knowledgeable about war but we are asked to sign up for it. Military recruiters line the hallways of high schools promising a future full of rewards, courage, and honor, but nobody talks about the fact that you are signing up for war.

War is bloody. War is exhausting. But sometimes, wars are necessary.

I am preparing for a personal war of my own. I know this pales in comparison to an actual battle or a military person's experience, but this is as close to war as I hope I will ever come. After all, it is called a custody battle for a reason.

Today is the day I go to war for my child, for her safety and peace of mind. Joey must've pulled strings to get a court date only two weeks after he filed for custody. The entire club along with my lawyer Larry and I have been scrambling to find an answer to this mess, but unfortunately going to court seemed to be the only viable option. Driver wanted to have Bear hack the lab's electronic medical records and report that Joey is not Hazel's biological father, but Larry said that wouldn't stop Joey from running his own independent test, and if he can prove we committed fraud that would land all of us in jail and Hazel in the hands of the enemy. Brody wanted me to take Hazel and run. The club said they would set up entirely new identities for us but that meant I could never contact Kade or Brody. I couldn't justify running from Joey again. I have to show him that I can fight back now.

The last two weeks have been spent locked in an office with Larry preparing for this day. We have about twenty witnesses prepared to testify for me. Only a few can attest to Joey's violent streak, but all of them can attest to my fitness as a mother. I will be the last person to testify today, and to say I'm nervous is an understatement, but I have to do it. I have to fight for my child.

"How you holding up?" Clove asks as all of us climb the steps to the courthouse. The entire club is dressed in suits while all of the girls are in professional dresses. After the fact, I'm sure I'll look back and laugh at how stupid we all look, but right now I can't focus on that.

"I'm okay," I lie as I rub my sweaty hands on my long sleeve navy blue dress.

"It'll be fine," Brody assures but his face holds an uncertain scowl. Joey lifted the restraining order for today only because HE called Brody as a witness. Larry says he is trying to prove that I allow unstable and violent people around Hazel, so Brody is under strict instructions to stay calm.

Last night, Larry gathered all of us in the bar, pulled out eleven bibles, and made all of the guys swear on a bible that they would keep their anger in check. I hope it works. I hope they have some sense of self-control with everything at stake and if that doesn't work, I hope Jesus reaches down and covers their mouths himself.

"You ready, Brenna?" Larry asks as we make it past security and stand in front of our courtroom.

"As I'll ever be," I try to smile.

"Okay, we have Judge Samson who is known for siding with mothers in most custody cases, so I think we are off to a good start," Larry says optimistically as I enter the courtroom with the entire club behind me.
