Chapter 1

The roads were dusty. A mob of kangaroo chewed on grass in a field next to the highway. The car drove amongst several others. I pouted in the front seat while dad drove.

"I'm not going to get used to this backwards, upside down life." I say staring out the window. "I really don't want to go dad." I adjusted my uniform skirt and grumbled.

We were heading for my new high school... or whatever they call it here. I had recently moved to Cairns, Australia from New York, New York. Nothing was the same. Everyone dressed differently and there weren't as many major fashion industries, strip clubs, or Broadway productions that I was used to in my hometown. I was used to being surrounded by people but now... there's hardly anyone in comparison to New York. It's quite a culture shock.

"Robyn, it will be fine. You will love it here." My dad said. He had recently been promoted and decided that moving here is what was best for all of us. My mom couldn't be more thrilled.

"What if they think I'm weird or something, I mean, I'm from New York. What if-"

"Too many what ifs!" My dad interrupted. "Stop that nonsense and get it together. You're starting your new year fresh."

I rolled my eyes and the car slowed, pulling up to the high school. "Bye dad. If I don't show after school, assume a koala took my life." I said getting out and closing the door to the car. I heard him chuckle as he speed away.

The school looked empty. I know I arrived late... an hour late to be exact... but there literally isn't a sign of life anywhere. Without looking back, I made my way up the stairs to the entrance of the school. As I walked down the hallway, I heard nothing but the sound of my shoes. I opened the door to the Guidance Office.

"Hi, I'm Robyn and I came to pick up my schedule." I said to the lady sitting at a desk typing away at her computer. She stopped and peered at me through her glasses. She gave me a small smile then stood and walked over to a file cabinet, searching through the loads of paper.

"Ahh here it is." She said with a thick Australian accent, pulling out my schedule and handing it to me. "Mitchel over there will help you out." She pointed to a boy around my age who was sleeping in a chair. He looked vaguely familiar.

I looked to the woman then to Mitchel. "Should I wake him?" I asked.

The lady laughed. "No I got it." She cleared her throat. "Mitchel!" She yelled loudly. He woke with a start and fell out of the chair. I couldn't help but to giggle. He stood up and brushed off his knees.

"You know Miss, it's rude to yell at someone who is sleeping." He grumbled then looked to me. "Shall we?" He asked leading the way out the door.

I nod and follow the cute boy.

"I'm Mitchel by the way." He smiled holding out his hand.

"I'm Robyn." I shake his hand smiling.

"Would you mind if I looked at your schedule to see where I'm leading you?"

"Sure." I hand him the paper. He examines it with a grin.

"We have most of our classes together." He smiled at me. "Now let me give you a tour of our amazing school."

I nod and trail after him.

*A couple weeks later*

The Aussie accents were no longer a struggle for me to understand. Everyone was mesmerized when I spoke, asking me to repeat words with my American accent. I found it rather funny that they enjoyed my impression of their accent as well.

As far as I knew, Mitchel was pretty popular. He tried to introduce me to some of his friends. The boys seemed friendly and so did some girls. Other girls were extremely rude, rolling their eyes when I talked or simply making rude statements about how 'American' I was. It was painfully obvious they were jealous that I was from American. Some of them haven't even left Australia before and here I am... world traveler.

The school was decorated on large banners of a dance that was coming up. I wasn't sure if the Australians did school functions the same as Americans but I wasn't ready to go alone just yet. I wasn't even sure if I established a core group of friends yet.

As I took a seat at my desk, I saw a folded note neatly placed in the corner. I unfolded it reading:

Robyn,

Meet me in the center of the field at lunch. I have something to ask you.

xx Mitchel

I grinned and put the note into my pocket eagerly waiting for class to end. The bell rang an hour later and I quickly maneuvered through the students and made my way to the field.

Sitting in the center was Mitchel, strumming away on his guitar. I sat in front of him waiting for him to speak but he continued with his song, "Say You Like Me." As I was admiring his vocals, he stopped and suddenly asked, "Robyn, so you know there's a dance coming up right?"

"Yes..." I nod. It's actually on Friday, four days from now.

"Well, I was wondering," Mitchel fidgeted. "Will you go with me to the dance, Robyn?"

I nod slowly. "As friends or..." I wasn't sure if he was into me. I wasn't even sure if I was into him but he was my friend and I really liked him as a person.

"Doesn't matter. I'm cool with either." He grinned.

I nodded slowly. "Pick me up at seven?"

"It's a date." He grinned.
