...
'Please do not fight. It won't work.' You tried to reason with the distraught people before, voice thin and strained.
You were barely holding together as the crowd pressed in around you, cries echoing through the village - children screaming, parents begging and the mass fear bleeding into the air so thick it made your chest ache.
Your body seized, every nerve screaming that this was wrong.
You weren't meant to be here, telling innocent people to roll over and surrender.
You weren't meant to stand shoulder to shoulder with soldiers holding guns to trembling innocent hands.
You weren't meant to be with the sky people.
Even if they wore bodies like yours, even if they breathed the same air - they were still wolves in sheep's skin.
You swallowed hard at the thought as you dropped to your huntches in front of the separated couple nearest to you. They reached for each other desperately, fingers straining just out of reach as the blue soldiers loomed behind them.
They didn't move, so stiff that you would've thought they were frozen if not for their swaying tails behind them.
'Please,' you pleaded. 'Do you know this Jake Sully? If you tell me, they'll leave you and your village alone.' They shook their heads, panic breaking through whatever strength they had left.
'Please stop this,' Tears streamed down the woman's face as she sobbed. 'We don't know! They took my baby, have mercy!'
She dragged herself closer to you, sand kicking up beneath her palms, desperate to be heard. You could feel your chest caving in, the guilt only growing.
'They don't know.' you said quietly as your gaze dropped to the sand where Miles stood, who was still holding the device with Jake Sully's image glowing on the screen.
'You sure?' You nodded, blinking back your tears.
You didn't look when he stepped away out of your view, you didn't need to.
You remembered too well what came next, images of what they had done to your village back home at the forefront of your mind. The way he never even hesitated.
A reminder that despite whatever had happened between you, whatever this world had given him, he was still the same man.
'Let 'em go,' he said flatly. 'We're leaving. Light it up!'
Your breath punched out of you, ears snapping upright as the words hit.
You barely registered the movement before the soldiers surged forward, shoving villagers to the ground. You watched as one reached back, thick fingers curling around the grip of his gun.
The same kind of gun they had used to burn your home to ash.
Without thinking, you rose to your feet and sprinted to where he was stood, back to you and arm raised and ready to carry out his orders.
You slammed the point of your shoulder into the unsuspecting soldier, the impact knocking the breath from him as he crashed into the sand face first, gun dropping with him.
You grabbed it with fury as you backed away, lowering yourself to your hutches in front of the hut, teeth bared as a hiss ripped from your chest.
The soldier stared at you from the ground, stunned with speckles of sand stuck to his blue cheeks.
