After that, Jake disappeared off the face of the planet. He didn't answer Bella's calls or mine, and from what Bella said, Billy said that Jake has mono. One rainy day, Bella showed up on my doorstep, soaked from head to toe, and said that Jake had abandoned her, saying that they couldn't be friends anymore. I had invited her in to take a shower and talk about it and she said that Jake had joined Sam's cult. To say I was pissed was an understatement. I was beyond pissed. I was furious! I wanted to go chew his ass out right then and there, but Bella needed me. So I stayed and comforted her as she cried her heart out.
A few days after that, however, Bella came knocking on my front door asking if I wanted to hang out. I said yes, of course. So, there I was, sitting in Bella's truck as we headed toward an unknown location.
"Where are we going, and do I get to kick someone's ass?" I asked. The older girl looked at me briefly.
"We're going to see Jake, and maybe." She said. I nodded my head and looked out the window.
"Ok, I'm fine with that." I said. After that, I was silent. The car ride was silent for the remainder of the drive to La Push. Soon we pulled up to Jake's house and we both got out, walking up to the front door. Bella knocked on it loudly and billy opened it.
"Bella, Daisy." The man said.
"I need to see him." Bella said to him.
"And I need to kick his ass." I grumbled. Billy looked at us and leaned back in his wheelchair.
"He's not in." He said. I looked at him and tilted my head.
"Bullshit."
"I'm sorry, I really need to see him." Bella pushed past him and headed inside to get to Jake's room. I just looked at Billy.
"Did you tell Jake that he and Bella couldn't be friends?" I asked him. Billy shook his head.
"No. It was his own decision."
"Well, what would make him choose to leave Bella when she needs him the most?" I asked. The sound of people hollering stopped the man from answering me.
"You'll find out soon enough." He said and rolled away, shutting the door. I walked over toward the source of the sound and saw Paul, Embry, Sam, and Jared walking out of the woods. I walked up to them, heading a door slam behind me.
"Why is it that every time I see you, it's with this group?" I asked playfully, looking at Paul. He just shrugged and smiled at me. I heard footsteps behind me and saw Bella storming up to the group.
"What did you do?!" She shouted. The group looked at her and felt someone grab my arm and gently pull me toward the group. I looked over and saw that it was Paul. Bella walked up and shoved Sam in the chest. "What did you do?" Paul pulled me behind him and stepped forward.
"Easy." The man put his arm in front of Paul and Jared.
"He didn't want this!" Bella looked at the group and saw me standing behind them. I merely shrugged, not having a clue about what was going on.
"What did we do? What did he do? Hmm? What'd he tell you?" Paul leaned toward her threateningly. I grabbed his arm and pulled him away.
"Both of you, calm-" Bella cut Sam off.
"Nothing! He tells me nothing because he's scared of you!" Bella only got angrier when Paul and Jared started laughing. Her lips tightened into a line and she slapped Paul across the face causing him to step back into me. His body was shaking violently, his body temperature rising drastically. I stepped back. Jared grabbed my arm and pulled me closer to him instead.
"Too late now." The boy said.
"Bella, get back! Jared, keep Daisy over there. Paul, calm down now." The man said in a commanding tone. Deep growls left the boy's body and his chest was heaving. What I saw was breathtaking, and terrifying. I watched as Paul, tall, kind, hot Paul, transformed into a large wolf. Grey and cream-colored fur, four legs, and a tail. He was standing right in front of Bella. And he was pissed. I pulled away from Jared and rushed toward Bella, pushing her out of the way. I turned and stood in front of the large wolf, breathing deeply and staring at him.
"Daisy, get out of the way!" Embry shouted at me, but I ignored him, staring Paul down. The wolf in front of me was staring at me with his huge eyes. Chocolate brown, human eyes.
"Paul," I took a deep breath. "Calm down." I stepped toward him and he seemed to flinch back. "I'm not gonna hurt you, honey. You just need to calm down."
"He's not afraid you're gonna hurt him, he's afraid he's gonna hurt you." Sam said. "Daisy, get out of the way, now." I looked up at him in confusion. I heard clothes tear and a loud thump behind me. Paul lunged at me and knocked me out of the way with his massive furry head as he and another wolf, this one red with hints of black, began fighting each other. A blurry mess of red and grey fur rolled on the ground, jaws and teeth snapping. They broke apart and lunged at each other again, rolling around on the ground again, breaking Billy's boat in half, and rolling into the woods, out of sight.
"Hey, take them back to Emily's place." Sam said before running off after the two wolves.
"Guess the wolf's outta the bag." Embry said while running over to me. "Are you ok, Daisy?" I looked up at him in shock.
"I just watch a guy that I met a month and a half ago turn into a giant wolf! Do I look ok!?" I shouted at him as I stood up. He held his hands up in defense and backed up.
"I'm just asking." He defended himself. "Come on. We've got to get you two to Emily's house."
"Leah's cousin Emily?" I asked. The boy nodded. I didn't say anything as I walked to the truck, Jared, Bella, and Embry following behind. I got in and was forced into the middle as Bella got in the passenger side and Embry got into the driver's seat. Jared must have gotten into the bed. The drive was silent but didn't take long as we pulled up to a wooden two-story house with a dirt yard. The porch was covered and had a tree going through it, which was weird but cute at the same time. Embry parked the truck and turned it off, hopping out.
"Yee-yee!" The boys shouted. I followed Embry out of the truck.
"Hey, I think, we should go back and see if Jacob's okay." Bella said as she rolled down the window.
"I hope Paul sinks some teeth in him. Serves him right." Jared said, hopping down from the upper level of dirt.
"No way. Jake's a natural. You see him phase on the fly?" Embry said, defending his best friend's honor. "I bet $5 that Paul doesn't touch him."
"Are they gonna be ok?" I asked the two older boys. I was more worried about Paul than Jake. I was still mad at him for ditching Bella out of nowhere.
"They'll be alright. They just need to let off some steam." Jared said. Embry turned around and looked at Bella as she stood outside of her truck.
"Come on in, Bella. We don't bite." The boy said. Jared turned and smirked.
"Speak for yourself." He said and headed inside. Bella walked up to us and Embry stopped us just outside the porch.
"Oh, hey, about Emily, Sam's fiancé... don't stare. It bugs him." The boy said.
"Why would we stare?" Bella asked.
