July 4th 1992 ~ STEVEN FELL'S POV

No matter how fun, I'd always found the annual Mystic Falls carnival overwhelming.

Flashing lights, shrieks of fear and excitement, mixed smells of savoury, sweet and spicy. During high school, it had always been the event my friends looked forward to every year, and therefore somewhere I was expected to be.

Plus, Mon loved it here, so I'd do whatever it took to make her happy.

This year, however, I was more tense than usual. Maybe it was my protective instincts locking in already. Maybe it was just because I was getting older, rapidly growing out of my teenage years.

Either way, I remained vigilant as my wife and I reached the front of the queue for the fortune teller that she'd begged me to visit with her.

Suddenly, two girls a similar age to Monica and I stepped out of the purple tent, one crying a waterfall of tears while being comforted by the other.

"She's good," the calmer one told us with a grin as they hurried past.

Mon and I exchanged amused glances before making our way inside hand-in-hand.

The room was dark, the only source of light coming from a few candles and lamps placed here and there. Artwork and floral decorations hung from the tent's walls, the smell of burning incense strong in the air. Mystical ornaments were sitting on console tables, a crystal ball in the corner - y'know, typical witchy stuff.

In the middle of the room was a circular table covered in a black cloth, behind it a purple canopy where the fortune teller sat patiently. She appeared young for her chosen profession, barely eighteen. Her hair was a striking violet-blue, cut into an A-line style resting at her shoulders. She widened her baby-blue eyes as we entered, her lips spreading into a welcoming grin.

"Hello there! My name is Leilah, it's so nice to meet you!" she greeted us cheerily. "Please, come in, have a seat," she instructed, gesturing to the two seats on the opposite side of the table to her. Her gaze stopped on the badge attached to Monica's shirt, her smile never wavering. "Happy Birthday."
