~ UT INCEPIT FIDELIS SIC PERMANET ~

KAI'S POV

You know during those critical moments of life and death, where your brain doesn't even have to tell you to help, to do the right thing, you just do it?

Yeah, well, you see... I don't have that.

I spotted the car crash — watched it play out in real-time, in fact — and yet I was more than happy to drive right on past as if nothing had happened.

I had more important things to do than care about some idiot who couldn't drive on an empty road.

That was until my curiosity got the better of me and as I drove slowly past to peer through the window to get a better look, I recognised the unconscious face of the last person in the world I was expecting to see.

Mainly because, as far as I was aware, she shouldn't have even been in this world.

"Amber..." I breathed in shock.

Now comes the dilemma: Did I save her, at the risk of allowing my sister a longer window of time to escape? Or did I carry on driving as if I'd never seen a damn thing just so I could stay on schedule?

To any normal person, the answer was obvious. But to me, someone who'd waited over eighteen years to get my revenge and been through too much just to let the opportunity slip through my fingers now... you could understand why it took me a few moments to make a decision.

I only prayed it was the right one and not some stupid lapse in judgement.

Parking behind the smoking car, I swiftly jumped out and ran towards the driver's side, inspecting the damage to construct a plan that wouldn't result in bringing her closer to death — if she wasn't already there, that is.

Concluding that it was safe, I opened her door and reached in, pushing past the deflated airbag to unclip her belt and catch her body before it fell. At least she'd been smart enough to wear one.

Blood poured from her mouth and a wound in her chest — the same wound that had killed her the first time, I happened to know — and soaked through her clothes, but it was gradually slowing down, warning me that the end was near. Crossing the anti-magic border must've stripped away the magic that was keeping her alive, meaning she would die if I didn't get her back to the safety zone soon.

"You're okay," I whispered as if somewhere deep down she could hear me. "You're okay. I've got you." Slipping one arm under her legs and the other carefully behind her back, I gently lifted Amber out of the car, grateful the metal of the vehicle hadn't crushed her limbs and trapped her inside. "Upsy-daisy..."
