~ AD ASTRA PER ASPERA ~

AMBERLE'S POV

I knew what I had to do.

During the week since the incident at the library, I'd spent every day locked in my room 'researching', only coming out to eat or update Enzo on my progress so he wouldn't get suspicious.

Unbeknownst to him, however, I'd been practising shadow work.

The moment I'd returned to the Boarding House that fateful afternoon, I'd immersed myself in the books, learning everything I possibly could in the hopes I'd be able to create that shadow orb all over again - and maybe more.

There was one ability that had caught my eye the instant I'd read it and hadn't left my mind since - something told me it would be Enzo and I's way out of this place.

I'd gotten as far as being able to dim a room, cast shadows from nothing, and perfect the art of creating shadow orbs... but I was still such a long way off. There were so many other incredible things I should potentially be able to do - I just needed a push in the right direction.

After spending hours getting nowhere from where I sat cross-legged in concentration on the bedroom floor, a dimly lit candle a metre in front of me, I decided it was time for drastic measures.

Jumping to my feet, I allowed my eyes to close, relaxing my mind and shutting down any subconscious barriers. "Okay, you wanna talk?" I questioned aloud, grateful Enzo wasn't home right now to overhear the crazy girl speaking to herself upstairs. "Let's talk." I inhaled deeply, rolling my shoulders back. "But no more dreams where I'm not in control. We do this on my terms."

Nothing.

How come she'd spend nights on end pestering me during my sleep, yet wasn't there when I actually needed her?

"Come on, Amber," I murmured encouragingly. "You can do this."

Fine. If she wasn't going to come out willingly, I guess I'd have to go to her.

Allowing my lids to flutter open, I locked my gaze onto the candle. I sharpened my senses to concentrate on the particles of light surrounding the flame, reaching out mentally as if to touch them. Once detecting a breach, I focused my energy on trying to push the veil between this world and the one I wanted to connect with.

The room began to grow darker, the shadow from the flame twitching the slightest as it began to flicker. Willing myself to keep going, I clenched my teeth together, forcing my way in as the shadows loomed closer.
