Last Night ~ ENZO'S POV

"Let me prove it to you."

As much as the idea of forcing the truth out of Amber made me uncomfortable, I couldn't deny how tempting it was.

I stared into her eyes for a few moments, searching for any sign of uncertainty or resistance. Finding nothing but desperation and stubbornness, I sighed, perching on the edge of the bed and holding her face in my palms.

This close to her, I couldn't help the hint of a smile that played about my lips.

Noticing, Amber chuckled. "What?"

I merely hummed in humour, shaking my head. "Nothing."

As I began to compel her, Amberle's features turned slack, her eyes locking onto mine.

"Why did you put yourself at risk by hiding your powers from me?" I asked directly.

She didn't hesitate to answer robotically, "Because I feel guilty."

I frowned, attempting to keep hold of the compulsion. "Elaborate."

"It's my fault that you're stuck with me," Amber replied in a monotone voice. "My death caused you to be trapped here - if it means I have to die again to get you out, then that's what I'll do," she explained further. "I care about you too much to let you down."

As I processed her reasoning, I lowered my hands and stared off into the distance, dropping the compulsion and allowing Amberle to blink back to reality.

"Now do you understand?" she wondered, almost pleadingly.

It was suddenly all too clear that her revelation had put her in a dangerous position. Her feelings for me made her vulnerable, and her reckless decision to put my future before her own was borderline insanity, no matter how guilty she felt.

Nobody should mean so much to someone that they actively chose to risk their life for them. Not unless they...

Clearing my throat, I pulled away from her, turning to leave. "It's getting late."

"Enzo, wait-"

As Amberle reached out for me, I paused to glance back at her.

"Before you go... could you do something for me?" she begged softly, a small pout on her lips. "Please?"

I tilted my head slightly as I asked, "What is it?"

"I haven't had a real wash in four days, and I don't have the strength to stand in the shower right now," she said, scrunching her nose. "Do you think you could fill the bathtub and help me into it?"
