~ FACTUM FIERI INFECTUM NON POTEST ~
STEVEN'S POV
There hadn't been any sign of the siphoning, life-ruining freak anywhere.
Which only added to my frustration. And Damon Salvatore's complete lack of competence wasn't much helping either.
"We got her out," he explained on the phone a short while after I'd last heard from him. "Jo's fine but Kai wasn't there. She said he went to get her a bandage and was on his way back."
"Good news that she's safe again," I replied truthfully as I attempted to hide my disappointment. "Shame Kai couldn't get his comeuppance though."
Damon huffed in agreement, echoing my vexation. "Well, I was hoping that's where you come in," he said. "You're still on the lookout, right? Any sign of the little weasel?"
"Nope, but I'm almost at the border now so-" My words cut off instantly as I approached one of the roads leading out of Mystic Falls. "Woah, woah, woah..."
"What?" Damon questioned, tone filled with hopeful intrigue. "You find him?"
"There's been a crash," I replied simply, pressing my foot lightly against the brake to slow my speed.
A scoff emitted through the phone's speaker. "So? Unless Kai's under the wheels I don't really c-"
Growing closer, it was only when I recognised the car's model and colour that my previously-light anxiety switched into full-blown panic. "Wait a damn minute," I gasped. "That's Amberle's car..."
"What?" Damon asked. Like I was losing my mind or somethin'. "But that's impossible, 'cause that would mean-"
"It's her car, Damon!" I snapped, swerving to park right in front of hers. "I gotta go."
Giving him no chance to argue further, I ended the call in an instant before swiftly getting out and hurrying closer to inspect the scene.
The driver's side door was open, the airbag deflated... but no sign of Amberle. There were pools of blood on the seat and floor, as well as a trail leading back towards the border. I followed it for a while until it seemed to stop in one specific area, an Amberle-shaped crimson stain at my feet.
Peering at my surroundings, I searched for any further clues. Tire marks where she must've swerved in an attempt to control the car, but no footprints or drops of blood leading away from the border back into Mystic Falls, or even the woods.
She'd just simply... vanished.
Without the correct equipment, I couldn't investigate as thoroughly as I wanted to so, instead, I settled for the quickest way to solve the case: calling my daughter. If she'd had access to her car, odds are she also had her phone. God knows that girl didn't go anywhere without it.
