Chapter 9: We almost died

It was Saturday, and everything you could think about was the next day and what the hell are you going to do.

You were already planning your outfit which was not going to be too sophisticated, but neither something daily. Something. Sleek. Something nice. Like a pair of black straight jeans and a dark turquoise shirt, with a biker jacket and a pair of black sneakers.
Yeah, not really sleek but something your style.

You were reading from your favourite book, "The Upside of Falling" by Alex Light, and while reading you couldn't help but imagine you and Kat in the book characters' shoes. It was a nice feeling.

But your cat, Felix, woke you up from your daydreaming by letting out a big loud meow reminding you that he is hungry. You put a bookmark at the page your were onto and got out of the bed. You went downstairs and while putting Felix's food in his bowl, you look out the window. Your jaw dropped. At the end of the alley in front of your house stood Vern, with his hands in his pockets and a determined expression.

Why does he know where I live? Why is he here?

About your parents, they were out of the country for a business trip so you were home alone.

You crouch immediately, putting the bowl down silently to feed the poor cat who had nothing to do with this. You crawl to the living room which was connected to the kitchen, where a monitor with the images seen by the video cameras outside the house was placed next to the couch. You reached the monitor and stood there on the floor. You kept watching Vern's silhouette through he cameras and how he was just staring at your house. He then takes his phone out of his pocket and starts doing something on it. Seems like he was texting someone. Your phone didn't show any notifications, so it wasn't you.

Whoever he texts, this can't be good.

You then remember that Rei doesn't live far away from you, just like 2 streets away which wasn't much at all. 10 minutes walking. Around 5 minutes running. You grab your phone and call Rei.

On the phone:

Kira:Rei, come at my house right now.

Rei: Ok, how bad is it?

Kira:Red.

Rei: Holy shit I'm taking my bike. 3 minutes.

Then you hung up. You, Rei and Isa decided that when you call each other and don't say 'hello' or any other greeting, it's an emergency. Also the colors red, orange, yellow indicate how urgent it is to arrive at the respective place.

You then look at the screen one more time to check up on Vern and your eyes widen in horror.

He wasn't there anymore.

You just realized how much luck you had in that moment as you were practically lying on the floor and because of that you were hidden by the couch that was in front of you. In front of the couch there was a window.

The window where Vern was staring into your house from.

You see his reflection on the screen because the light from outside was reflecting on the monitor. You then check your phone and see a message from Rei.

Rei: I'm bringing pepper spray and a tennis racket. Don't ask.

Whoa. This girl is unbelievably smart.
You suddenly hear a bike horn sound and your expression lights up.

Rei's Point Of View:

Kira has no idea how scared I am right now because I don't know what happened. Yet I'm peddaling down her street, approaching her house, with my pepper spray in my pocket and my tennis racket in my backpack. When I stop in front of her house, my eyes widen. Vern?! What's this loser doing at her window?!! Poor girl must be scared as hell.
