Ethan, if....
.... you finally want to know the truth•••
Nothing special.
Nothing special, Ethan had told you, what his job concerned. According to him, there was no real job title, so at some point you simply stopped asking, but he had told you one thing, namely that he worked for the most diverse companies and thus in the most diverse industries. Cross-industry, if you will. And because of that, he wasn't really allowed to tell you anything, because secrecy had the highest priority and was therefore one of the most important things in his job.
What also belonged to his job were business trips. Several times a year, he went somewhere in the world for several days.
So really believable, what Ethan told you, was not much. It began after a good year, after you got to know each other and since then, were good friends. A short weekend trip, three days, from Friday to Sunday and during Monday, he was back. Yes, back he was, but with a bruised shoulder and "merely" a cracked rib, as he said to you. A minor accident. Nothing earth-shattering. Nothing dramatic.
In the years that followed, however, things didn't get any better.
What followed were various injuries. And the visible ones, you were one hundred percent sure, were only part of what was. Everything else could be wonderfully swept under the table.
About three years later, it slowly began that you gradually became a couple. Neither of you knew how things were with the other respectively, and the question of whether more would come of it was thus never asked.
Three days, four at the most..... maybe five, Ethan had said to you, which made you just say 'm-mh' and not pay much attention to him. It was always the same. Away for a few days and back, with some kind of injuries.
When he asked you what was wrong, you just shrugged your shoulders and put some glasses back in the cupboard. Your answer, the truth, followed after a few minutes of silence.
It was enough for you. Trade secrets and the like, were one thing, but being taken for a fool was another and that was not on at all.
It was obvious to Ethan that he understood how much it annoyed you by now. However, there was nothing more than a that it was complicated to hear from him and that he was sorry, could not say much about it.
