Detective Chief Inspector George Gently - Portrayed by Martin Shaw
George Gently is a former Detective Chief Inspector, who is pulled out of retirement by Detective Inspector Jill Raymond, following seven grisly murders of men, women and children. George resumes his position and is drawn to one particular case as his former Detective Sergeant John Bacchus joins in on the case as back up for Jill and Shane.
George becomes suspicious of one particular murder who he comes to recognise and is angry that someone is killing people. He is particularly close to Danielle Wolfe - whom he served with in the army before they quit due to a disagreement with their then lieutenant over an incident with a young boy.
Detective Sergeant John Bacchus - Portrayed by Lee Inglby
John Bacchus is a Detective Sergeant who worked with George Gently until the latter retired, John was at first a show off and often resorted to violence before being redeemed by George and taught new skills which helped to shape him into a better police officer.
He arrives at the London Metropolitan police having heard that his former boss is back, they greet each other with a hug and a joke as George notes that John has sprouted up since he last saw him. John laughs it off as they smile at each other, John is the first to figure out one of the clues but Shane tells him that it led them to a dead end.
