Adalyn's POV

I lie in the unfamiliar sheets, next to the unconscious body, trying to remember how I got here. This probably isn't the best way to start off the summer. I stealthily get out of bed and slide on the pair of skinny jeans on the floor and throw my black crop top over my head, moving very quietly so as to not wake my late night tryst. I grab my combat boots and shuffle through the messy apartment, trying to find the door. It is dark, I can't see a thing. I reach into my pocket and take out my phone to get some extra light.

"Hey." I jump at the high-pitched sound behind me. "Going so soon? It's the middle of the night."

I slowly turn around in embarrassment of getting caught trying to sneak out. "Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you." The tall blonde beauty stands in the hallway with her arms folded over her chest and eyes squint at the sudden flash of light.

"Aren't you going to stay the night?" As I was about to reply, my eyes glimpse the exit opposite to her, her face dropping as she notices.

My hand reaches for the door handle. "I have somewhere to be." I give her an apologetic look as I stand in the doorway, knowing I was about to leave without saying a word.

"We should do this again sometime," she utters, giving me a small hopeful smile, but I know nothing was going to change my mind. My silence says it all.

"One-night stand. Got it." I hear her say in disappointment as she closes the door.

I don't like sticking around too long after my rendez-vous. These were only casual hookups to me and nothing more. Sometimes, I felt bad when I got to this part of the night, but I made it a habit to not spend longer than a night with anyone, no matter what.

My phone buzzes in my hand as I am leaving the building. It is my best friend.

Brie: Where are you?

Brie: You're late

Brie: Adalyn Rose! Get your ass here now!

I check the time to see that it is already after ten. I was supposed to be at her house hours ago. I rush to my car and drive as fast as I can, thankfully only getting green lights on the way.

After I pull up in her driveway, I immediately get out of the car and head straight for her room. Mr. and Mrs. Dawson were nowhere to be seen. Brie's parents were workaholics for as long as I've known them, and I've known Brie since I was five. They are always on business trips and would only return for a day or two before leaving again. Their kids practically raised themselves. It must be hard not seeing their parents often, but at least they don't feel smothered all the time.

As I pass down the hall towards Brie's room, I notice the light on in her brother's room.

"I didn't know you were back." I lean against the doorframe while he takes a book off the shelf and sits at his desk.
