Adalyn's POV

We have to scrap our original idea of spending Brie's birthday at home, eating sugar until we drop and having a Harry Potter movie marathon, to something even more fun so we can manage to get Michael to come.

"So what exactly is the plan?" Brie inquires.

There is the option of throwing a big party, but we want something more intimate, plus Ashton will throw a fit if he finds out. Kaia also brings up the idea of going to the beach, but Brie isn't the biggest fan. Ever since she was little she hated the beach, I never knew why, she wouldn't tell me, I just always thought it was odd.

"We are getting nowhere with this," Brie groans in frustration and facepalms herself.

Lila suddenly sits up straight in her seat and screams, "OMG! I HAVE THE PERFECT IDEA! LET'S GO TO THE LAKE HOUSE!"

Lila comes from a rich family. They all do, but they aren't the stuck up types to rub it in people's faces. Sometimes I forget they come from money. Brie mostly feels the neglected part of being a 'rich kid', but she always has us. My mom was a 'rich kid' with diamonds, pearls, fancy clubs, but she left all that behind to marry my dad. I was never jealous of what the others had, it's not like we didn't have money, we just weren't as wealthy. My dad used to say 'money doesn't buy happiness' and I will never forget that.

"My parents won't mind. And it's empty all summer, so it's perfect."

"I love that idea." We all agree to go up to Lila's lake house for a few days. It will be such a great vacation from this same old place. I think we all need a change of scenery this summer.

We follow Brie inside to get some lemonade and then head up to her room to coach her on how to talk to Michael, but then I see Ashton sitting on the couch in the living room, watching a movie. I wave the girls off and move in that direction instead.

"Dawson, I have a question for you." He rolls his eyes as I innocently stand in front of him.

He lets out a sigh and his green eyes look up at me, annoyed by my presence. "What do you want now?" His head turns back to the TV in front of him, not even waiting for my answer.

"Well..." I sit beside him on the sofa when I happen to glance at the screen, "Oh I love this movie." My eyes become fixed on the TV while a huge grin sits on my face. "I used to watch Back to the Future with my dad all the time. It's one of my favourite memories of him." My smile starts to fade when the memories flood my brain.

My dad was my favourite person in the whole wide world. He passed away two months ago, in April. He was in a car accident. It was all so sudden, I'm still trying to come to terms with the fact that he's gone. Things I used to do with him, I can't bring myself to do anymore. That's why I was so excited when Lila suggested the lake house. I'd get a few days away from everything that reminded me of him, from everyone asking if I was okay.
