Ashton's POV

Laughter comes from the room down the hall, disturbing me from the work splayed on my desk. They are up to something once again, and I know for a fact that Adalyn Rose is the instigator.

I've read the same line ten times now because I can't focus with all the noise, so instead, I go down to the kitchen to get something to eat. Yes, I just got home, and yes, it's summer and I've already started going through the syllabus for the next semester, but it's what I'm accustomed to. I don't know a life where school and grades aren't my first priority.

As I bite into the sandwich I made, I hear footsteps marching down the stairs, and I'm immediately hit with Adalyn's sass. I've been away for a while, but I'm pretty sure she has her own house with other people to terrorise.

Adalyn has been trouble since the first day she waltzed into that front door. She was like five, and it was after Brie's first week of preschool. Brie and I were home with the babysitter because our parents were stuck at work. Again. Adalyn's dad dropped her off, and they immediately ran to Brie's room to colour. I was across the hall completing my homework when Mrs. Torres, the babysitter, called me downstairs to help her with dinner. Adalyn had snuck into my room and ripped up my homework and tried flushing it down the toilet, clogging it. She still has that same evil smile she flashed me when she lied to everyone, saying she saw me do it. We've been in constant battle since then.

It's funny. Brie still has this image in her head that one day Adalyn and I are going to get along, but at this rate that's never going to happen.

After the argument I had with Adalyn, and Brie yelling at us, I leave them alone to do god knows what. I'm sure I'll find out some way or the other about their adventure tonight, but at least I'd have the house to myself.

I got a lot done in the time they were gone. I even have time to treat myself to a movie. The end credits start rolling in and I check the time to see it is half past twelve. A million thoughts start running through my brain when I realise Brie isn't home yet.

Did they actually get themselves killed?

We only have each other since my parents are never around unless they need something, so I may be a bit overprotective of my sister, but anyone would be if someone they love hangs out with a devil spawn like Adalyn.

Speaking of...Adalyn's name flashes across my phone screen, slightly easing my mind, but I know her, calling means they are in trouble.

I contemplate answering because they made their own choice to go out there, but the voice in my head makes me answer.

I unwillingly swipe my finger across the screen. "Why do you haunt me?"

"Aww, were you thinking about me again, Dawson?" she snickers.
