"Eren.." Armin called, his voice wasn't a yell, yet it wasnt a hush either, but it echoed through the rows of old bookshelves.
I got up to my feet and put the book that I was holding back to it's shelf. If not, Armin would be lecturing me for hours about it.
I stepped out of the section I was and walked down the aisle. The more I walked deeper to the older books' section, the dustier the bookshelves seemed. It signified that not many go in and out to these sections.
The smell of the aged papers got stronger in these sections. It smells alot like Armin, considering that he works at the library and spent most of his time surrounded by books. He's like a book-elf. Whenever you look at him, there would be a book in his hands or a pocket sized book in his jeans.
I won't be surprised if he even brought the books to the bathroom. Well, it might get wet, but who knows. Everything is possible, right?
I still couldn't find my blond friend after walking a bit farther to the back, so I called out to him. His voice was farther to the back as he said that he was in the oldest books section. I finally found him surrounded by piles of books on the floor at the back section. And in his hands was a very-old-looking book , its sort of more like a journal to me, with a leather cover.
"Armin?" I called his name, he looked at me with his eyes glittering with excitement. And his broad smile tells me that something has caught his interest.
"Eren! Look! This is AMAZING!!" He was bouncing in excitement while shoving the book to my face, as I took a place beside him after pushing several piles aside.
He withdrew the book from my face, without letting me take a glance of it, he flipped the pages and his face was full of fascination. I could only look in confusion.
"This.." he gestured at the book, "..this is the greatest discovery I have ever made!" He was shaking when he said it. "This.. holy book is just beyond words, Eren! Look! Who ever made this is a true researcher! I...I-I just WANT to meet this person!"
"If they are still alive though.." I said snapping him back to reality, "Armin, I don't even understand what you're talking about all this time.. mind explaining?" I said to him, one of my hand propping my chin on the stack of books near me.
Armin muttered an apology that I replied with a small smile, as I patted his ruffling his hair a bit.
He made a little cough to gather his voice before speaking," So.. I was just cleaning the books in this section. Then, I just stumbled into this.. small leather covered book. It was different with the others, and I was just abit curious in what was the inside of it.." He showed me the cover of the said book, "..And as you could see there's no title on it. So I opened it, to see the content.." He breathed out before continuing again, but this time his smile got wide. "Its just beautiful, Eren. You need to see it yourself," He said while looking at me with hopefull eyes. And looking at it I just couldn't say no to him. I sighed, "..... Let me see what it is about first.."
I took the book from his hand and opened it. The content was written by hand, and with black ink. The first front pages were only words, and a few small scribbles of some foreign, symbolic text. I assumed from the first few pages, that it was about accient texts or relics. I skipped a bunch of pages, but surprisingly some things caught my interest.
The drawings on the notes was magnificently beautiful. They were more of sketches than drawings though. But the scribbles and messiness just added its value.
I closed the book and looked at Armin. "So? Will you try reading it?" He asked me, I could see he was anxious about my reaction to it with the way he was fidgeting and bitting his bottom lip.
"... Well, at least the sketches in it caught my interest.." I said giving him a questioning smile, his face instantly lit up at my answer. "Really?! I'm sure you'll love it, Eren! You could borrow it till you finish reading all of it! Hell, you need to borrow it! I'm sure it'll bring back memories when we were little!"
"... ehmm.. why would it be nostalgic?" I was confused at his last statement. Well, why would translation of ancient texts bring back memories? I'm one hundred percent sure that I have never seen one nor Armin or Mikasa had discover one.
"..... you really didn't even read a little did you?" He stopped to look at me, and sighed. " Well, I don't care. Just read it when you get home! Literally R-E-A-D it. I'm sure you'll understand why." He stood up and brushed the dust from his beige pants. I did the same to mine ,but with one hand as the other carried the leather-covered book.
As he put the books on the floor back to it place, I was struck with confusion once again. My hands were still moving to help him sorting the mass of books. "Wait.." the pace of my hands slowed down as I processed something in my mind.
"Hmm?" He didn't look at me,
"Didn't you just discover the book?" I asked him,
"Yup," he confirmed,
"But how do you know I would love it when you haven't even read it?" I asked again, carefully.
"I never said I haven't read it." He answered calmly,
"But, you just found it.."
" Yeah, I just found it."
"...." I was getting more and more confused by it.
Sensing my confusion, He only took a glance at me before opening his mouth again, "When I say 'I opened it', I meant I was reading it,"
"But still, we.. just.. you.. just.." I was so confused that I can't even form a sentence.
My mouth was just hanging open, trying to understand the situation.
He stopped his work and looked at me and said, " a half an hour is more than enough.." he said it as if it was what people mostly do, ".. But its THIS thick." I pinched the book to let him see the thickness of it. It is like about three to four centimeter of thickness.
"Yeah.. so?" He said it casually, then getting back to his work again.
I was just staring at him with wide eyes, dumbfoundedly and in disbelieve.
Conclusion of the day? Armin spend to much time with books. Thick books.
