Tom Riddle had a secret - he had murdered his family. Arabella Chambers knew his secret - she had witnessed it.
After Tom Riddle kills Arabella Chambers, he steals her wand for safekeeping. But, unexpectedly, Arabella shows up at Hogwarts, very much...

"Last year, I learnt about my family," Tom started, "I learnt that I am the great descendant of Salazar Slytherin, that I am destined to finish his noble work and rid the wizarding world of muggle heritage." Arabella could hear the danger in his voice, his dedication. It didn't waver. Neither did his eye contact. Arabella was sure he wasn't even blinking. "I am destined to become the greatest sorcerer of my time. So, I-"
"-wait," Arabella interrupted, "how do you know you're 'destined to become the greatest sorcerer' of your time? I just- I'm not understating it."
Tom narrowed his eyes at her in annoyance. "Because, I am the descendent of Salazar Slytherin," he hissed, irritated. "I have to complete his legacy."
"Uh, okay. Go on," Arabella told him, not convinced. "Resume the story."
"So, I travelled to Little Hangleton to seek out my family. I went to the Gaunt Shack. That was where I found Morfin Gaunt - half-crazed, shame to the Slytherin name. He told me my father was a filthy muggle, not my mother, like I had originally thought. He told me that I am a half-blood."
Tom had a murderous glint in his eyes as he leaned forward a bit, a hint of a smirk on his features. "Now, when I am to become the most powerful being, I can't risk anyone finding proof that I am a disgusting half-blood, that I have muggle blood running through my veins. So I murdered them. Every last one of those foul muggles," he spat out. "I set up my crazed uncle by modifying his memory. For some reason you were in the house too, so I murdered you, though you came to Hogwarts alive."
Tom narrowed his eyes at her and Arabella just shrugged. "I saw you marching up the hill, so I followed. Can't blame me for being curious."
He chose not linger on that and carried on. "If I am to become the most powerful wizard, I have to be immortal. I have to live forever."
It seemed Tom did not know anything about immortality, Arabella thought. He didn't know the effects.
"Death is a weakness, Chambers. I spent years looking for my magical father because my pathetic mother couldn't be if she had succumbed to death. I was wrong. Now, to become greater than others, I have to be immortal. I will create a hocrux - many, actually."
Tom was scared of death.
Stupid boy.
Stupid, power-hungry boy.
He knew nothing of true immortality. He was only 16.
Tom leaned closer with a smirk on his face. "You do know what a hocrux is, don't you?"
Of course Arabella knew what a hocrux was. Did he really think she was that brainless?
"Don't underestimate me, darling," Arabella replied. Her voice was bland, though. Emotionless. "A horcrux binds a piece of the wizard's soul into a separate object. So long as that object is hidden, not destroyed, the wizard is kept immortal. And the only way to rip the soul is to commit an act of supreme evil - murder. Split a soul for a soul."
