It took Torin all of 15 minutes to get to the cabin Zain had told us about. I was out of the car before he had it in park, my wolf driving me forward. Ash was sitting on the ground holding Miren in his arms. All the air left me lungs in relief. She was safe, she was here with us.
"No" my wolf corrected "not us, them". He whimpered and I wanted to join him as my heart broke. "She didn't want me" I though as Torin dropped on his knees in front of her "she wanted Ash and Torin". I started to back away when she looked up and our eyes meet. For a moment I didn't know what to do but when she reached out for me and Rowan who had come to stand beside me, I broke. I ran to her, pulling her as close as Ash's hold would allow.
"Thank you for coming" she whispered.
"Always" I said, my voice braking "we will always come for you"
"I know you will" she smiled at us and it was like the world was suddenly bathed in light. I looked at Ash, realizing that although his eyes had changed back to their normal violet, his markings were still glowing slightly.
"They won't go back to normal for a long time" Zain answered my unspoken question "some alphas never go back, only time will tell"
Ash steward at Zain for a long minute before nodding and turning back to Miren.
"Thank you for your help Zain" Torin said, still not leaving his spot by our mates side.
"Of course, mates are precious" he grin sadly "even if their someone else's"
"It's ok" Miren told him "I have a feeling things are going to change very soon"
Zain raised an eyebrow, could Miren sense something that we couldn't?
Zain just shook his head "well anyway I better get started on the clean up"
"There's no need" Miren told us "nobody died tonight"
"What do you mean?" I asked her.
"I mean there wasn't anyone else here when Ash came".
"Then what happened to the one who took you?" Torin asked her.
"They left" she explained "they wanted to die, that's why they took me but I managed to convince him that there was still hope for a mate"
"You talked down 4 rouge alphas?" Zain asked, his shock evident.
"No there was only 2" she paused as if considering "well really there was only 1, the other he..there was something wrong with him. It was as if he was already dead"
"Alpha decline" Zain muttered "but what about he other?"
"Cassias" she said, "he told me his name is  Cassias. He also said something about pledging his service or something"
"He gave you a pledge?" Ash asked her.
"Yah, it was like something out an a movie. He got on one knee and everything" she tilled her head to the side "be I guess when your 500 years old it's probably normal". We all went silent. 500 years?! There was no why. There was only a hand full of beings that could live that long let alone retain their sanity.
"That is a problem for another day" Ash announced, coming to his feet Miren still in his arms.
"Do u need a ride back" Torin asked Zain as Ash marched to the truck with Rowan and I following. The bear could find his own way back for all I cared. We need to get home and be with our mate or your wolves we're going to go crazy. I could still fee mine clawing at the back of my mind, trying to get me to let him out. Miren must have sensed something was off because "Roman, Rowan" she called "will you sit back here with us?"
Rowan looked at me, a smile spreading across his face, one that I realized matched my own. Without a words we ran to the truck and hopped in, arranging ourselves so that we could all touch our mate.
The night was coming to an end, we had our mate and for once all was right with the world.
