I turn quickly to see Drue emerge from the trees with his bow drawn. His eyes dart from me, to Zilla, to Luna. He quickly draws an arrow back and attempts to shoot Zilla. "ZILLA RUN!" I turn and shove Zilla into the tree line. The arrow flies past me and into a tree. Zilla mounts Moonlight and rides off dropping a piece of paper.
I'll be back for you in a few minutes.
I turn back to see an angry Drue. He stomps towards me, "Why, for the love of God, did you protect her?!"
"What are you doing out here Drue?"
"Hunting."
"In Thornwood?"
"I wasn't paying attention."
"You shot Luna!"
"I told you, I'm hunting."
"Horses?!"
Drue looks over to Luna's corpse and looks back unfazed, "whoops."
"WHOOPS?! THAT'S ALL YOU HAVE TO SAY?!"
"We don't have time for this. Come, the king is worried."
He starts walking towards me and I back up.
"No."
"No? What the fuck do you mean, no?"
"I'm not going back."
Drue shoves and pins me against the tree with the arrow in it, "What has gotten into you? You're coming back with me! The king has promised me your hand and I not letting my chance to be king slide!"
My eyes widen and my breath gets caught in my throat as I process what he just said. The king has promised me your hand in marriage. He- he's kidding, right? Cause he hit his head real fucking hard if he thinks I'm marrying him.
"I will never marry you."
Drue's face turns red with rage as he lifts his fist to hit me. I promptly grab his dagger from his holder, duck, and pin him to the tree with the blade against his neck. Drue's eyes widen in shock. "If I did, the new poor king might pass in a terrible accident. Just a fair warning."
"Are you insane?"
"Better than being 'sane'."
"You have no choice!"
"We'll see about that."
I back up and Drue runs off into the forest. I still have the blade in my hand. I should probably start keeping one on me.
Not even a minute later Zilla comes creeping back into the clearing, "Is he gone?" I nodd and Zilla runs up to me and pulls me into a hug, "I'm so sorry Ivy. I didn't want to leave you there. I was so scared you would get hurt, or killed, or taken back. I should've stayed. I felt so selfish leaving you behind. I-"
"Zilla."
Zilla sighs and goes quiet. "Zilla, I told you to run off. If you died I would've felt horrible." Zilla doesn't let go for a few more minutes. When she does she leads me to Moonlight, "Come, we must return." I look back to Luna's corpse. She might not have been mine but she was a good horse, and I still loved her, "What about Luna?" Zilla sighs, "I'll send people out here to give her a proper send-off, then they'll get the day off tomorrow." I nod and look back at Luna one last time.
I'll miss her.
