Finally finished with my bath I dry off and get dressed. I brush out my hair and tie it into a braid. As I finish with the black ribbon on my hair I look into the mirror and for the first time in forever, I smile to myself, for no reason at all.
I walk into the bedroom and find Zilla sitting on the bed reading her book. She looks up and smiles at me, "Did that help?" "A lot, thank you." I sit down next to her on our bed. Zilla rubs my thigh and I lay my head on her shoulder. She sighs and closes the book, "I was hoping we'd have a little more time..."
"What?"
"My plant has informed me that preparations have begun to get you back. They estimate 3-5 days."
"3-5 days?! I usually stay at least a week!"
"King isn't messing around anymore. Says he needs you back so he can have the ball."
"Curse him."
Zilla looks over at me with a weird expression on her face. "What?"
"It's just- I'm sick of losing you. How much longer do we have to wait?"
"I don't know Zilla. I don't think the kingdom would take it too kindly if you just overthrew or killed him."
"What if- What if we didn't hide anymore?"
"Zilla, you know we can't do that."
"But how do we know that? What if I stay when they-"
"Zilla no! Are you out of your mind?!"
She grabs my hand and squeezes, not to hurt me, but to try to comfort me and herself, "We can't hide forever! I'm tired of playing the villain, Ivy. I just want us to live together and be happy."
I see tears start running down her cheeks which makes me tear up.
"I'm done with this bad guy role. I don't want to play this stupid game anymore. I understand you are not yet Queen. But you have to have some power over the people."
"I'm sorry Zilla. I have tried. No one cares, no one wants to."
Zilla goes quiet. I feel bad for her, I really do. I want to be with her too but I just don't know how to go about it. "I'm sorry, Zilla," I whisper, "I really am. I am doing everything in my power." Zilla pulls me into a hug, "I know you are, Ivy... I know you are."
