LANET HINE'S POV
I was on my way to the Masquerade ball when my phone beeped, alerting me that there was a break-in at my penthouse. I made a U-turn and drove back, only to find my safe box broken into.
They only took the Graff Pink diamond.
My guards linger at the door. "Sir, we can't seem to find anything from the footage, the cameras are blank from 7 pm for 8 minutes," the guard hands me a tablet with the footage, after I left, a few more people go about their business then at 7 pm cameras go blank. When there's movement again, however, I see a familiar-looking person exit the building
That looks like, no, it can't be. He lives in another hotel. Try as I might think otherwise, the man looks exactly like my Mysterious man.
"Thank you, I'll hold on to this for a while," I say to the guard, staring at the screen in front of me.
"Uh, yes sir, but won't you..."
"Thank you, I will hold on to this," I say sternly
"Of course." The guards leave, and I watch the footage over and over again. After hours of investigating, I've come to the conclusion that it's him. I took a thief out on a date.
"No, he isn't just a thief, he bypassed my security." Either way, I was foolish to think he even liked me.
I call my assistant and tell her I'll be off work for a few days, then spend the rest of the night searching. Hours later the face recognition software hasn't found anything. Come on, it shouldn't take that fucken long to find someone.
I eventually fall asleep on the couch, with the screen in front of me. When I woke up the following morning, there he is, Dr Langley, and an address. It's not a home address though, it's an address to a clinic where he did his residency 4 years ago. It's better than nothing.
After a quick shower, I get into the car and drive out of the city, following the GPS to the clinic.
As soon as I drive into the neighbourhood everything looks different very different compared to where I am coming from. Everything seems to be falling apart, store wood signs that are barely holding on, the rusted light poles. Children play at a park with one or two swings, homeless people line up at a mobile soup kitchen not far from the park. This place is where the middle class live? I wonder what the lower class zone is like.
Maria has told me stories about how the other classes live, but I had never seen it for myself until now.
I arrive at the small clinic, that's in between two towns and it is packed, but at least it looks better than most of these buildings.
When I walk in I am greeted by the smell of suffering, and the sound of harsh hacking coughs, but above all I see nurses and doctors tending to patience lovingly.
