Two weeks later:

Emily was wide awake. She laid on her back staring up at the ceiling, hands intertwined on her stomach, thumbs tapping together nervously. She couldn't sleep.

Truthfully, she was terrified to shut her eyes again. After months of healing, Emily knew that the second she fell asleep, she'd see Dallas. Or maybe it was the twin in the dream all along? Either way, she couldn't get more than four hours before the nightmares started. It filled her with so much rage that it was almost unbearable. Emily couldn't get her mind to wrap around this situation even if she tried.

Instead of being in her comfortable bed at either hers or Y/n's apartment, she was stuck here in a vacant office. She was a prisoner to these tan walls, small mini fridge, and the most generic wall art she's ever seen. Emily was now accustomed to sleeping on the rock hard pull-out bed from the couch. Luckily, the girls managed to go and grab them their temperature sensitive comforter and soft cloud-like pillows. At least there was some comfort here.

Y/n laid on her side, right next to Emily in deep slumber due to exhaustion. Y/n had a lot on her plate as well. She was helping Penelope as best as she could to help track down any place Dallas might be at in the city. She was also in constant coordination with Candy and Shirley to pass on any information about the club. Not to mention, she had absolutely zero excuses to avoid the profiling class. This lead to her having an equally sporadic sleeping schedule—passing out at three in the morning before waking up anywhere between nine in the morning or noon.

Emily shut her eyes tightly, trying to shut off her brain. When it didn't work, she figured curling up next to Y/n would help her relax. She carefully wrapped an arm around her girlfriend's waist. Emily buried her face into the crook of Y/n's neck and pulled her back as gently as she could.

Emily inhaled deeply before shifting her head slightly to be more comfortable. This method worked, until she felt a hand on hers. Emily sat up on her left elbow and leaned over to see Y/n's eyes semi-open.

"I'm sorry. Did I wake you up?" Emily asked and softly caressed Y/n's arm. The young woman sighed and shifted her eyes to look at Emily. She shook her head. "Then why are you awake?"

"The melatonin gummies didn't work," Y/n said with a slight pout in her lip. Emily cracked a soft smile before turning her gently to face her. "And what are you doing awake?"

"Someone took all the melatonin gummies," Emily joked and smoothed her hand over Y/n's cheek. The young woman rolled her eyes and smiled softly. "I just couldn't sleep. Nothing to worry about."

"I know you, Emily. I know when your mind is going a million miles an hour," Y/n whispered as she ran her hands through Emily's hair. Emily shut her eyes at the loving touch. "What's going on? What are you thinking?"

Emily gulped as she turned her attention to Y/n's hip under the comforter. She drew small circles with her index finger against the small area of exposed skin. Y/n couldn't tell if Emily was avoiding the conversation or thinking through what she wanted to say.
