When you opened your eyes, it was dark. It took you a moment to realize you weren't in the same place you went to sleep. It was damp. The ground below your feet was a familiar stone texture. You had been here many times before. The castle.

Light echoes of distant footsteps reverberated on the walls and high ceiling above you.

"This place...again?" You murmured. Even at the low volume your voice had an odd echo to it. The castle. You hadn't been here for awhile now. "Another dream?" You held a hand up to your face and flexed your fingers one by one. For a dream, you were awfully lucid.

A low rumble resonated through the corridor you were standing in.

After a moment your attention shifted from examining your hand to the footsteps you heard a moment ago.

They had stopped.

You could hear breathing.

It was coming from behind you.

"You again?" The words escaped your mouth before you could stop them. You didn't need to turn around. You had a guess as to who was behind you. Turning around would only reveal the man with the shadowed face. A man you didn't know. A man you quietly feared.

You had dreams exactly like this in the past, but none before were this vivid. The cold wet air around you was near suffocating. The stone below your bare feet felt as if it was cutting into your skin. The draft in the corridor made you shiver.

All were an attack to your senses. A shock to an otherwise stable system.

Unwanted. Unneeded. Unexplainable.

You could still hear him breathing. With the exception of your own heartbeat, it was the only sound.

He took a step closer. You refused to turn around. A heavy hand was placed on your shoulder.

In your peripheral vision you could see a large clawed hand.

You refused to turn around. Instead, you focused your eyes on the darkened corridor in front of you.

The décor was ancient. There was tapestry hung to the nearby wall. Even in the dim unlit hall you could tell it had excellent craftsmanship. No doubt it's beauty would be more easily appreciated in a better lit environment. Beneath the tapestry was a table adorned with a red cloth. On it sat several knickknacks you barely paid any mind to. Your eyes wandered from the wall to the pitch-black void that seemed to stretch out into nothingness in front of you.

You closed your eyes, not wanting to think about what may lay ahead. The weight of the hand on your shoulder was beginning to grow heavier. Your eyes continued to wander, doing anything to distract themselves from looking back at the monster behind you.

Eventually your eyes found themselves taring their attention from the wall with the tapestry to the wall opposite, and vice versa.

Your eyes continued bouncing from one wall to the other, examining every little crack and imperfection in the stone.

As your gaze left the tapestry wall, something in the darkness down the hall caught your attention. A sheer while glint. A mask.

You gazed into the darkness and it smiled back.

A clown with a white mask and unnatural smile came into focus. The clown seemed to glide towards you without making a sound.

A dark cloak swallowed most of its figure. A massive scythe was held at its side.

"Hey! You!" You yelled, voice echoing down the hall.

The clown didn't react even slightly to your harsh call. A shallow breath escaped your lungs as the strange apparition passed you by without regard.

Your eyes followed the clown as it glided past like a ghost.

The being with its hand on your shoulder no longer bothered you. All of your attention was on the newcomer. You had the urge to follow the clown.

"Out of my way." You sighed, dodging the man with the shadowed face to run after the clown.

Doors appeared and disappeared from your peripheral vision. Pitch blackness smudged together, making it more and more difficult to navigate the strange nonsensical dreamscape.

Before long you found yourself standing alone, unable to even see your hand in front of your face. You slowly backed up, trying to locate the wall, only to feel your back hit something that felt like fabric.

You looked up to find a pale white mask smiling down at you.
