Cold air. Fluorescent lights. Monitors beeping. The intercom would call doctors to different departments. Doctors and nurses occasionally rushed past you with stretchers.
Once again you found yourself at the hospital.
After confronting the copy of Blake that broke into your house, everything was a blur. You remembered sprinting downstairs from your bedroom to assist Jaya with treating your mother. You remembered being held back by a paramedic as his partners worked to stabilize your mother's condition. You remembered silently crying while in the ambulance, watching through blurred vision as the EMTs kept your mother alive. You kept your eyes on the unsteady rising and falling of her chest.
Shortly after arriving at the hospital you had to be held back by a security officer because the doctors needed to bring your mother in to surgery. You were barely thinking as the security guard tried calming you down. The guard led you to a waiting area just outside of where your mother was having surgery. He left you alone for some time before returning with a very familiar police officer.
And now you were here, staring up at the officer with your tired, tear-stained face. The shiny metal nametag he wore read 'Joe Greenmin'.
"Do you have any idea who might have done this?" The man asked, having taken a statement from you that detailed everything you told him.
"No." You sighed, looking down at the ground. There was no way you could tell him the truth. You cursed fate for playing such a cruel joke on you at a time like this.
"Are you sure?" Officer Greenmin asked, putting his notepad away.
"I'm sure." You replied softly, trying to keep your voice from cracking.
"Is there anybody I can call for you?" The man asked, noticing you were alone in the waiting room.
"No." You mumbled, cradling your face in your hands. Senora Jones didn't have any family. After the accident that took her parent's lives she packed up everything and moved to Rosewater to start a new life. The two of you were the only family the other had.
Officer Greenmin gave you a pitying look before nodding and leaving.
As soon as he left, you took out your wallet and pulled out a photo. It was the one you took with your mother just outside the bakery.
You shifted in the waiting room chair, your back was aching and your head hurt from crying. The smell of latex and cleaning supplies were making you dizzy. The crackle and low hum emitted from the intercom system was starting to make you crazy.
Despite that, you refused to move. The red light above your mother's operating room was still on. You weren't going to leave.
"Y/n?" Jaya's voice gently pulled you from your spiraling thoughts. You looked up to find the girl holding a water bottle and bag of chips. "I brought you something from the vending machines." You weren't hungry, or in the mood to drink, but took the items anyways. Jaya frowned when you placed the items on your lap without opening them. She sighed and took a seat next to you. "How are you doing?"
"They've been in there for hours." You answered quietly.
"Hey, my dad's in there, and he's one of the best emergency surgeons in the country." Jaya said, trying to comfort you. "He's taking good care of her."
You tore your eyes from the red light above the surgery room to look into Jaya's pale blue eyes. A part of you wanted to believe the girl, but there was something behind her eyes that told you she was just as uncertain about the situation as you were.
Before you could continue on that dark avenue of thought, two familiar faces came into view.
"Y/n?" Jaya asked before noticing your gaze was looking past her. She turned to see what you were staring at.
"Mr. Joestar? Jotaro?" You looked up at the men with confusion. "What are you doing here?"
"I...called them." Jaya answered hesitantly. "I figured you'd want to tell them about everything that happened." Jaya knew you had an odd bond with the men. She also figured it would be good to have some familiar and friendly adults around to comfort you given all the police and medical personnel that had been swarming you the past few hours.
You tried your best to avoid both men's concerned gazes. Tears welled up in your eyes, you brought your hands up to cover your face. You felt like a child for crying. A scared little kid that didn't know what else to do.
When you managed to get yourself back under control, you found the red light went out.
You shot up from your seat to meet Dr. Rossi as he exited the operating room. You felt your heart jump in your chest when the man took off his facial scrubs to reveal a downcast expression.
Dr. Rossi took a moment to look at the tiled floor with a solemn expression before meeting your anticipatory gaze.
You felt your heart beating in your ears. A sick feeling entered your stomach.
"I'm so sorry Mx. Jones..."
"No..."
"Unfortunately, we could not stop the internal bleeding, and the damage done to her major arteries in both her lungs and throat were too great."
"Y/n...?" Jaya took a step closer to you, but refrained from touching your quaking shoulders.
"I-" Your knees went weak, tears gathered in your eyes and this time you let them flow freely. "...oh god..." You choked on a sob.
"Oh my god!" Jaya rushed to your side after watching you collapse to the hospital floor.
You had fainted.
