Yeah you were not ready.
You were ready to leave and not meet him. You walked in after Aether and Childe and immediately muttered a "fuck no." Aether heard this and grabbed onto your hand, squeezing it in comfort. For some unknown reason, probably shock from the contact, you were immediately filled with confidence. Why were you nervous in the first place? Was it the unsurety that he knew you knew the future? At this point a decent amount of people knew that so why did it matter if he knew?
You turn the corner as Childe waves to Zhongli who sat at the end of the table with a cup of tea in hand. Zhongli smiles softly at the group of you and gestures to the seats next to him. He didn't seem to have any recognition of who you were but you still held the suspicion that he knew who you were.
"Traveller, [Y/n], allow me to introduce Zhongli. He's a consultant for Wangsheng and a trusted associate of the fatui." A smile grew on your face which you hid behind a surprisingly good cup of tea as Childe continued to talk about Zhongli and his connection to the Fatui. You could tell Paimon was building the wrong idea and that once Childe caught on, he continued to intentionally mislead her. You held back a laugh as Paimon tried to defend herself when it was revealed that Zhongli worked at a funeral parlour. "Anyway, I brought you here to meet Mr Zhongli because-"
"Because I can bring you to see Rex Lapis's Vessel." Zhongli cuts off and Paimon's jaw drops while Aether leans closer, curious about where the conversation was going. You just continued to pick at the food littering the table.
What? You had heard this dialogue before and the food was really good!
After a small lore dump by Zhongli about the funerals of fallen adeptus Aether accepted his offer while you pondered over the fact that even though Aether did want to meet all the Archons, why did he accept to see the geo archon vessel? Like he's supposed to be dead dude, what are you going to do, cast Comune with the Dead?
"And with that my bridge building is done." Childe sighs heavily and stretches before looking back at the group of you. "You can do what you want now, don't worry about me. I'm going to stay here and have a few more drinks... and try to get acquainted with these things they call "chopsticks" in the meantime."
You laughed.
Well it was more of an extremely ugly snort because you were taking a sip of tea. Tea and laughter do not mix. 0 out of 10 would not recommend.
While Childe gives you a weird look, Paimon and Aether immediately try to find a way to help you, concerned with your wellbeing as you hack up air.
"Sorry, just the way you said "chopsticks" as if you've never seen them before." You laugh out knowing full well that Childe probably hadn't seen them before. You blink as he remains silent before chuckling. "Really? Do you want me to teach you how to use them then?" You offer, still half laughing. Paimon gives you a weird look as if saying "The fuq [Y/n], he fatui" but you couldn't care less.
Childe pauses for a second considering your offer which surprises you. You didn't think he'd be "man enough" to admit he needed help but here we were.
"That would be great actually, then I won't embarrass myself later on." He sounded genuine which was very confusing but you shrugged it off and picked up a pair of chopsticks before looking at Aether and Paimon.
"I'll meet you guys outside since you shouldn't keep Zhongli waiting. It won't be too long." You say and with a slightly encouraging smile so Aether would feel comfortable enough to leave you with the Harbinger. After a moment of hesitation Aether nods and gets up to leave, a frustrated Paimon behind him feeling that she was never listened to.
"So you trust a Fatui Harbinger enough to be left alone in a room with one?" Childe asks in a more serious tone when Aether was out the door. You just move your chair closer to him with a shrug and pick up the chopsticks.
