The doctors had to keep a close eye on Lizzie because they thought if they left her alone, she would try to hurt herself again. They had one of their interns watch her in morning and night. In between that, Dr. James was trying to figure out what was wrong with the poor girl. Dr. McGray and her husband Dr. Shane were doing another exam on Lizzie. Just when they finished, Lizzie got a sharp pain in her arm and started screaming and crying. Dr. Shane and Dr. McGray rushed to calm her down, but they didn't what to do. Dr. Shane looked at Dr. McGray, then back at Lizzie and urgently asked, "Lizzie, what's the problem? What hurts?" Lizzie said through gritted teeth, "My arm. It's my arm. It HURTS!" Lizzie wouldn't stop moving wrething around in pain. Her parents walked in and looked at the doctors. "What's going on?! What happened to her?!" Connie exclaimed.
Dr. McGray said, "We're trying to finish the exam on her. She started screaming in pain and won't stop moving." Lizzie had begun shrieking. Quickly, McGray gave her a shot. Frank stepped forward and asked, "What are you doing? What are you giving her?" McGray looked at Frank and responded calmly, "It's just something to help her relax."
Lizzie's movements and screaming became less and less noticeable, and eventually stopped all together. She layed on her back, eyes closed and breathing slow. Then McGray looked at Lizzie quizzically. "Uh... Dr. Shane, could, uh... could you please come here for a second?" Dr. Shane looked confused. He walked over to his wife and looked at her and asked, "What's wrong?" Dr. McGray grimaced at Dr.Shane and said, "Look at her arm.... There's something inside it. And it's moving." They both looked at her arm. Dr. James walked in and McGray and Shane quickly straightened up and turned to look at him. James said, "I know what's wrong with Lizzie. It's so simple! How come I didn't see it before? I'm so stupid I-" McGray cut him off. "HEY!" James looked at her and quickly said, "We have a problem. Your patient just spazzed out. I know we have to run tests, but I think I what's wrong with her"
Frank looked at Connie and Connie looked at and Frank and asked slowly, "What... what's wrong with our daughter?" Frank continued urgently, "Please tell us what's wrong. I can't see our daughter in pain." James looked back and forth from Frank to Connie before saying, "There's blood clogged in your daughter's vein that's causing the her pain in her arm."
Connie was confused and asked "How is it causing her pain?" James responded, "Parts of her veins are closed off and the clog bouncing back and forth trying to continue flowing." The parents looked at each other in terror, then looked back at James. Connie asked breathlessly, "What's going to happen? Will she always been in pain?" James shook his head. "No. She'll have surgery and it will be fixed without any problem." Connie was relieved for a moment. Her face became worried again and she asked, "She has to have surgery? How long will that take?" McGray said, "It will take about one hour. Two if it turns out to be worse than we think." Connie got scared and asked, "What do you mean worse than you think? How could it be worse?" Shane looked at Connie and said "If there are problems, Lizzie could lose her arm. Or, die." Frank looked terrified, but managed to push out, "How could she die?" McGray shifted nervously and responded, "It's a sensitive surgery. A vein runs the chance of getting cut. She could bleed to death." Connie shrieked, "WHAT?! Bleed to death?! No!" Frank reached to hold Connie, saying "Connie-" She cut him off. "NO! My daughter isn't getting the surgery! Not if it might kill her!" Lizzie began waking up. She groaned weakly. "Mom?" Connie rushed to her side and said " Lizzie! Lizzie, sweetheart, I'm right here. Mommy's here." Lizzie looked at Connie and mumbled, "I'm getting the operation." A moment of silence passed before Connie went to say something and Lizzie stopped her. "I don't want to be in constant pain anymore. It's been over a year now. Please let me do this. I know what happens if something goes wrong, Mom. But you have the best surgeons operating on me. Everything is going to go fine."
Connie was holding Lizzie's hand and looked at the doctors then said " We.....we will have the surgery" James said "Okay, Lizzie your surgery will be first thing in the morning. Just get a lot of rest and Lizzie you can't eat anything before the surgery okay" Lizzie nodded her head. The doctors left the room so she can get some rest before the operation.
