We had been here for a few days now. I had stayed away from the lab. I didn't want to see what they did there. It wasn't right tinkering with Nightblood like that. Even if it was to save everyone. I might not be very religious, but I was enough to know it was wrong. Every night I got a report. The first test subject didn't make it, then they forcefully took bone marrow from Luna and wanted to inject it in Emori, until Clarke came to save the day and Abby had destroyed the radiation chamber. But we weren't doomed. Apparently they had found a bunker where we could survive. Only catch, 1200 people would fit.
At the moment I was in the living room, finally healed and able to fight again. The stitches had been taken out and now there was only a scar left. The others were packing their things, but I was already done. I held the trident in my hand and swung it around. Pretending that there were warriors there I began training. Cutting through the air I used different combinations, moved across the space, used the sofa to jump higher, making rollers on the floor and stuff like that. I was too caught in my own world that I didn't notice someone watching me. Running towards the armchair I stomped off it and made a salto over it. Landing in a crouching position with one knee in the ground and my arms out to my sides, the trident in my right hand. I breathed heavily. Sweat covered my skin, my heart was racing.
"Glad you can still fight. I'll need it in the war in Polis." Roan suddenly said and I looked to my left, he was standing in the doorway leading to the kitchen. Standing up I put the trident back in the holster, slightly panting. "Get your things, we're leaving." Then he left me. He had been acting weird around me ever since he stitched me up. I sometimes found him staring at me and then quickly turning away. Or he would just leave very quickly after telling me something. The usual anger brewing in my chest whenever he was around seemed to have dulled. Maybe I had accepted that I would be stuck with him, that I would have to defend him, fight for him, and be loyal to him. I don't know.
I nodded even if he wasn't here. I went back to my room and put on my short sleeved leather coat over my tank top. Crossing the belts over my abandon I secured my three daggers and swung the satchel over my shoulder before leaving the room. I rushed out of the house, I didn't like it much, made me feel trapped. I found the others outside and we all made our way to the boat. Abby and Clarke were at the head -leading the party, chatting away- meanwhile I walked at the back next to Roan. Jackson, Bellamy and the guards whose names I always forgot were in front of us. I didn't say a word to Roan, I wouldn't even know what to say.
Thankfully I didn't have to as I saw the boat between the trees. Once we reached it we began loading everything onto it and soon enough we were off. I sat by the back, watching the water and the soon sinking sun. Letting out a breath I stared at the beautiful view. If I knew it was the calm before the storm I would've enjoyed it more.
On land again we filed into the big truck, I sat in the back with Roan, Clarke and Abby. We were silent through the whole ride and I fell asleep a few times too.
I fidgeted with a dagger in my hand. These past days had made me think, had made the walls come down a few times. For an unknown reason I hadn't been able to shake what Roan told me before in the throne room. How they didn't care about me. I didn't want to believe him, but I couldn't stop the doubt from infecting my thoughts. I had been telling Clarke that this was all wrong making Nightblood. But she didn't care. All she cared about was saving her people. I couldn't blame her though. But it all became complicated and confusing, what was the truth? Or had Roan just said that to make me loyal to him? Did Clarke care about me or did she too just want a warrior on her side? I had no answer.
It was already dark outside when the truck stopped. Snow was on the ground, something I hadn't noticed before. I jumped down after Roan and grimaced at my tired legs. They must've fallen asleep during the drive. I shook them to get blood back and turned to the others.
"Clarke, can I talk to you for a second?" Abby suddenly cut in before Clarke could get out of the truck.
She turned to me and Roan. "I'll catch up." Roan grabbed the black bag and held it over his shoulder. Nodding at her I followed Roan around the truck. I kept my hand on one of my daggers, I didn't trust these woods, anyone or anything could be here. We followed the guards and Jackson towards the tunnels. The forest was dark around us, no moon shining through the trees and the snow crunched under our feet. My silver eyes scanned our surroundings, I had a bad feeling about this. It didn't help that I felt watched too.
"You expect someone to be here?" Roan suddenly questioned beside me, referring to my searching gaze and hand on my dagger. I looked up at him to see him already watching me.
"No, just a bad feeling." I answered him as we stepped out in the clearing. Kane emerged from the treeline opposite us and held up a hand in greeting.
"Gentlemen. It's good to see you." he began, his next sentence a bit lower, "Just- wait here."
My brows furrowed. "Where are the guards?" Roan asked, confusion in his voice.
"Our people aren't back from Arkadia yet." Kane answered. Ok, something was definitely wrong.
"Kane, don't. Roan!" Clarke suddenly called from behind us, she and her mother walking into the clearing. Her mother tried to stop her. This was wrong. I grabbed my trident at the same time as Roan gripped his sword. Hearing branches rustling I turned to the tunnels, watching as Trikru scouts emerged. They headed right towards us. A trap.
"Trikru. What is this?" Roan grumbled and pointed his sword towards Kane. I stood close to Roan, watching the treelines for more warriors. As his guard I knew I had no other choice but to defend him. I prepared for battle.
"There doesn't have to be any violence." Kane began just as I heard the sound of arrows flying. Twisting to my left I stood in front of Roan, ready to protect him. But to my surprise the arrows were aimed at the Trikru people. The first two warriors were hit and fell to the ground. Azgeda arrows. All of the warriors were killed. Shouts were heard as the Azgeda warriors emerged from the trees. I held my trident in front of me ready to attack anyone coming my way. Archers had their arrows aimed at us while the others attacked my friends, putting them all down to the ground. Echo was among them. I watched as one came towards me, machete in his hand, black eyes staring me down. He was about to attack when someone stopped him.
"Don't." Roan called from behind me and the warrior obeyed. I glanced at him with a shocked expression, "She's with me."
