"Commercial banks sell marketable securities to the National Bank, and the NB grants the local banks loans in return. At the same time, it is agreed that the banks will buy back these securities after a fixed period of time. For the duration of the transaction, the banks must pay..."
Economy. Boring as hell. Beomgyu tried his best in all subjects but economy had to be an exception. Each sentence he read made no sentence until he repeated it to himself 50 times.
Beomgyu was tired of constantly sitting on the same stool and reading through the same page for hours. He glanced at his phone to check the time. Maybe he should take a break, he'll catch up later.
He opened the window in his room and felt the fresh but cold air against his skin. He quickly headed down the stairs to get a glass of water.
He kind of froze when he stepped into the kitchen. At the kitchen table, there was Yeonjun and Ha-ri doing homework together.
"...is a measure that shows the general price development of all those services that are important for consumers."
Well of course he was helping her, since 'Yeonjun is that kind of a genius'.
"Oh I see" He heard Ha-ri say.
Beomgyu loudly sighed and walked towards the sink to then grab a glass.
"Oh hey Beomgyu" Ha-ri greeted.
Beomgyu nodded and looked over their shoulder at the paperwork.
"Homework?" he asked.
"No, he is helping me with my upcoming exam. Economy" Yeonjun nodded in agreement.
Isn't that what Beomgyu was struggling with not many minutes ago?
Beomgyu hummed and went back to the sink to fill up the glass with water.
"Great, I'll sit with you" the boy then decided and took a seat next to Yeonjun.
"W-what?" both of them said out loud.
"You know what they say about your boyfriend? He is apparently a genius. Am I not allowed to use 'this family's privilege'?"
A small fire spread through Ha-ri's eyes. Beomgyu didn't feel sorry for disturbing their moment together, instead, he glanced with an innocent smile to Yeonjun.
Yeonjun gulped and proceeded with the chapter.
"So as you can see Ha-ri, the business cycle is a period of economic development"
"And what if-"
"What are the factors of influence in the business cycle?" Beomgyu interrupted his sister, completely ignoring the death stare.
Yeonjun bit his lower lip nervously and glanced down at the paper "Factors..."
A smile was growing on Beomgyu's lips, as he waited patiently for the elder to answer.
"Here uhm," Yeonjun replied then, pointing at the page, "it can be influenced by wars and crises, as well as currencies and financial markets."
Ha-ri rolled her eyes. She knew her brother well. He always had to be nerve-wracking and prove his own point.
"Did it answer your question Beomgyu?" He then asked and Beomgyu nodded satisfied "Thank you seonsaengnim" (teacher in Korean)
They went on for 20 more minutes. Beomgyu didn't know if his step-sister actually understood whatever Yeonjun was saying, or if she just pretended to. In the end, Yeonjun actually is good in this subject, kind of scary in his opinion.
After finishing studying the chapter, the couple grabbed their things and stood up. Beomgyu was still sitting down, as he got an idea.
"I'm sorry Ha-ri, but you need to lend me your boyfriend for a while" he stated, and 4 eyes glared at him surprised.
"Me?" Yeonjun scoffed.
"Yeah we still need to discuss about our group-project" Beomgyu explained while enjoying the devastating look of his sister.
"What project?" she asked.
"Yeah what project?" Yeonjun added, but with a smile.
Oh don't you dare to play dumb, Beomgyu thought to himself.
"We got assigned to do a group project together in school" Beomgyu explained in a monotone, "in History class"
Ha-ri laughed off "No one believes you Beomg-"
"That's so great Gyu, you and Jun should really work together!" their mother's voice penetrated through the room.
Thanks mom, Beomgyu thought.
"You could really learn something from our Yeonjun" she added with a sweet smile.
Fuck you mom.
Five minutes later the two boys were again sitting in front of each other. Beomgyu happily with his Laptop, Yeonjun fuming and spinning with the pen through his fingers.
"What is it that you wanna discuss?" he questioned irritated.
Beomgyu pouted his lips together and shrieked his shoulders. "Nothing much actually"
He could see Yeonjun's eyes rolling upwards. A chuckle left his mouth.
"Whatever" he commented and grabbed his AirPods to stick them in his ears. He's gonna wait a while and then he'll leave this house.
Meanwhile, Beomgyu mustered at the raven-haired boy.
"What songs do you listen to?" he then asked out of nowhere. Yeonjun looked up with a raised eyebrow.
The taste of music has always been an interest to Beomgyu. He always wanted to know how other people felt about it or what they listened to it.
"These" Yeonjun mumbled and placed his phone in front of Beomgyu. A list of songs was displayed on the screen.
"Oh, but those are all sad or calm songs" the younger commented disappointed.
"Yeah they make me relax"
Beomgyu nodded and gave the phone back "Can't relate. Sad songs make me sad too. There are enough sad things in life, I don't need music to influence me on that too"
Yeonjun shifted his gaze to him with a questioning look. Beomgyu couldn't read his face but it might have been an expression out of comfort.
"You need therapy" he then said.
"Says the one who understands economy"
A moment of silence slipped in, which got by each second more awkward.
"Could you help me in writing this shitty thesis at least? I don't think I can do it all alone" Beomgyu explained, and looked over with hope.
"Nah"
"Sorry?"
"You don't need me," Yeonjun said and stood up. As he exited the kitchen, Beomgyu followed him.
"What do you mean? It's a group project, we do this together!"
Yeonjun shook his head and put his jacket on. He didn't see why he should help that menace.
"You have plenty of time. See ya" he phrased while putting his shoes on.
Astonished, Beomgyu watched Yeonjun walking through the door, making his way out.
He exhaled loudly and shrieked his shoulders. At least got something out of this situation.
Yeonjun didn't say bye to his girlfriend. You could imagine how this insignificant gesture meant a lot to the nerve-wracking Beomgyu. A step closer to success, you could say.
