“Why are we going to the Main Hall again?” Becky inquires.

The four of us are on our way to the hall, following countless students. All the students up from eighth grade are doing the same.

“Some program, I suppose” Mireya answers.

“What’s special about today?” Jesse asks us.

“Uh uh.” is my reply. Who knows? For all we know it could be the Principal’s birthday.

Oh wait, that was two months ago. The whole school got a treat.

So maybe the…Vice Principal's birthday?

It’s definitely not my birthday.

I smile at my own joke.

That wasn’t even a joke, idiot.

Five minutes later, we’re all seated in our seats. Conversations are going on around the hall while the Prefects try to silence the students. I, on the other hand, am starting to feel sleepy.

I stayed up till eleven yesterday and woke up at three in the morning. I kinda did study…

Okay. I fell asleep on my book from three to four thirty but still. At least I woke up. That’s what counts.

Who am I kidding?

I still couldn’t find answers to yesterday’s conversation. I tried asking Mom but she just brushed off the topic saying it was nothing important. I tried talking to Father but he told me to stop worrying about that stuff and concentrate on my studies. As if that was a surprise

Wait till I corner Conrad. The liar.

At this very moment, I’m trying my best to keep my eyes from closing on their own. Hopefully, no one notices me nodding off.

“Kathleen!” I slightly jump, wide awake as Mireya calls my name.

Oh dear, did she notice me drifting off?

“Woah, didn’t mean to startle you,” she says as Jesse laughs on the other side of me.

I attempt a smile, slightly embarrassed.

“Look!” Mireya says, and I follow his gaze to find Aaron standing near the front. He also happens to be a prefect.

A slow smile spread on my face, sleep forgotten,  as the two of us stare at Aaron talking with a teacher.

“Ooooooo," Becky says beside Jesse, and all of us except Mireya laugh.

“Don’t laugh!” Mireya hisses as Aaron nods at something and starts heading toward the back. He glances around at the students seated as he goes. Mireya is the one sitting nearest to the path and I hold my breath as Aaron nears us.

He glances our way and I muster a bored look on my face. His gaze slides right past me and lands on Mireya. It lingers for a moment before he glances away. I turn to my friend biting my lip. Mireya is staring at her fingers as if they were the most interesting thing ever.

I start giggling and the other two follow.

“Oh my God!  That was soo cute!” Becky squirrels.

“He definitely looked at you!” giggles Jess. I agree.

“Did he really?” Mireya is most definitely blushing. “the moment he glanced this way, I looked away.”

“Mireya!” the three of us groan. She just gives us a pained expression.

Suddenly, I hear rustling and we turn to find all the students in the back standing up. In seconds the whole hall is standing.

It’s probably the Principle. It is normal that when the Principle arrives the whole room is to stand up.
