I had spent the entire day trying to teach Miles and his stupid avatar squad how to speak Na'vi, starting with my name, Ni'awtu. I had gotten comfortable enough with them to where I was able to have my hands free again, but by late evening most of them started zoning out or getting impatient and moody. I tried to remind them that you quite literally can't learn an entire language in a day but that just seemed to piss them off even more. It was almost eclipse when Miles had given them permission to walk back to the base and soon it was just us.
I looked at him in case we were supposed to leave too, but Miles didn't move. He stood leaning against one of the trees with his arm so I decided to go and walk over to a softer patch of grass to sit on. The sun had completely disappeared by now and the forest began to glow, lighting up with all kinds of bioluminescence. A few minutes passed when I saw Miles start to move his arm. No no please not yet. I didn't want to go back to that awful place, not now. I thought for a minute and then quickly spoke. "Miles?" He turned his head and lowered it to look at me from where I was sitting. "Can I teach you some more words? It'll be quick I promise."
I heard a rumble in his throat while he stood there, thinking. "Oh come on! Don't you actually want to learn this, or are you as lazy as the rest of them?" I whined. He exhaled deeply and to my surprise he sat himself in front of me. "Five minutes," he ordered, lifting his finger. "Five minutes and no more. Then you'll get your ass up and we're leaving." I smiled and sat up straight. "Okay!"
I began with basic words and phrases, teaching him as if I were teaching a young child. "Rutxe," I slowly said, motioning for him to repeat. "Rutxe. And that means what?" He asked me. "It means 'please', irayo means thank you." He repeated this a few times and I giggled, putting my hand over my mouth. "What?" "You're saying it wrong, Miles." He stared at me and tilted his head. "I said it the same way you did." "No, look." I lifted my arm and moved it closer to him, then paused. I held my arm in the air for a short second, looking at him. His eyes moved down to my hand, but he didn't move. I then slowly placed it on his throat, feeling his body shift slightly at the touch of my hand but not moving a millimeter. I held it there, and his yellow eyes trailed from my hand back to my face. I looked back at him, our eyes meeting. Neither of us pulled away for several long seconds, until I blinked and opened my mouth. "Say it from here," I quickly said and pulled my hand back, looking down. "..Irayo," his voice rumbled softly and I smiled. "Yes! It sounds perfect."
A few moments of silence passed and I continued to look down, softly running my finger through the grass and watching it dimly light up at the touch. Little stones and drops of dew on the grass lit up with all kinds of different colors. I smiled as I moved my finger across the dew droplets and connected them. I kept my head down but made an effort to look upwards so I could catch a glimpse of Miles. To my surprise, he was watching me. My eyes widened and I quickly looked back down. I heard him snicker quietly and I don't exactly know why, but a small smile creeped across my face from it. It was kind of strange to be sitting next to him like this. I thought, no I still think, that he's a monster. He is. But I found myself looking up again to meet his eyes.
"Time's up," I heard him say a few minutes later as he looked down at his arm. I nodded and stood up. I tilted my head back and yawned, sending a shiver throughout my body. No words were spoken as he walked back to the base, me trailing right behind him.
||aaa thought this chapter was kinda cute.
