I stepped back onto the cold hard tiles of their base as I followed Miles. He slowed down to a stop next to several sky people that stood around a table with pictures of what seemed like a map of the forest hovering over it. I squinted at it from behind Miles, who was watching with his hands rested on his hips. My eyes moved to one of the sky people across from us, watching the man press all sorts of buttons as the floating pictures moved around. They don't know where my father is yet, I realized. Yet.
Miles had stood there for several minutes talking to the sky people while I backed up and stood in a corner with my head down. What do I do? They're looking for him, why, he didn't do anything. How do I get home to warn my family? I wonder if they even know where I am. What do I do? A million questions seemed to spin around in my head, I was starting to give myself a headache. What do I do. There was nothing I could think of in the moment except to simply just accept the fact that I was here with no way out. I wasn't sure if I could outrun these avatars if I had the chance, I certainly didn't think I could outrun Miles if he started to run at his full speed. But what if I could? I paused for a minute and then shook my head. It didn't matter if I could. I still have this stupid collar around my neck, they would find me wherever I went and I wouldn't even want to know what would happen after they caught me. I sighed and then looked across the room at Miles, his back still turned. Earn his trust. Try to, at least. I was certain that this was the only way I could escape, at least have a chance to. If I earned not only his trust, but the rest of theirs, maybe I would have that chance to be free again. Free.
I was still standing in the corner, lost in thought, when I suddenly caught Miles turning back around from the side of my eye. He cleared his throat and I turned my head to see him motioning for me to come over. I quickly walked towards him, and he gestured towards the sky people standing beside him, flicking his hand at them while he walked past me. "Go with them," he ordered as he walked away. What an asshole, I thought to myself as I stood in front of the sky people. What did he think I was? Some object that could just be handed off to whoever he wanted for whatever reason? Who did he think HE was? I stomped off with the sky people, following them towards the end of the room and around a corner. Right before I turned it, I looked back at Miles walking away and had to bite my tongue to stop myself from yelling at him from across the room.
I followed the sky people down a hall and stopped in front of a room with its door open. I poked my head in, and one of the sky people motioned for me to walk in. "This is your new room," she said as we walked inside. "There's a bed for you to sleep on so you don't have to sleep on the floor." She pointed to the mattress in the corner of the room and then turned around to face the other sky people behind her. I saw one of them hand her a plate of some sort and she then handed it to me. "Eat this and get some rest," she said as she stepped out of the room, pulling the door to a shut. "You'll need it."
What that meant, I didn't know. I looked down at the plate and eyed it. Long, pale strings stuck together and sat in a pile with a thick red liquid on top of it. I scrunched my nose and then lifted the plate up to smell it. I really wish I hadn't, I quickly set it down and started coughing and gagging. What is that? I stuck my tongue out in disgust and had to look away but I knew I was going to force myself to eat it. I hadn't had anything to eat the previous night, or today. Okay, I said to myself. Big bite. One, two, three GO. I used one hand to pinch my nose and the other to scoop up as much of the food up as I could and dropped it into my mouth. I started to cough and quickly swallowed it all. I then repeated this a couple times until the plate was empty. I had to cover my mouth most of the night to keep myself from throwing up. How do they eat this? They're even weirder than I thought.
I sat awake for a long time, at least it felt like it. I looked out the window of my room to see that the sky was still pitch black. I rested my head on the bottom of the window, thinking about Miles and how he had acted when we were alone. He was still as cold as he had been since I've known him but for the smallest moment, when our eyes met, I thought that I could see the slightest change in his yellow eyes, the slightest change in the way he looked at me. It was barely enough to notice, but I somehow did. I wasn't quite sure what it was, but as quickly as it had slipped out it had disappeared. I could feel my face heat up as I remembered the feeling of our eyes locking. I shook my head quickly and put my hands on my cheeks with wide eyes. He is a monster. He is a killer, I reminded myself. And I knew that it was wrong. But a small part of me wondered, maybe a smaller part of me even hoped, that there would be a moment like that again.
