The morning sun shone through my window, golden rays of light shining onto my skin as I woke and sat up. I could hear distant talking from outside my door, I assumed it was coming from down the hall. I stood up and stretched, reaching my arms behind me and then covered my face with my hands. My ears tilted towards the direction of the sounds from afar and I put my hands down and walked towards the door. I wrapped my fingers around the handle and gently pulled it towards me so I could walk out. I shut it quietly behind me and walked down the hall to find Miles and the rest of the avatars standing together. They all turned around to face me. "We'll look who's here." I looked at Zdinarsk (or Z-Dog, as Lyle and the others seemed to call her) and gave her a small smile. "What are you doing?" I asked. I stared at the others and then looked up at Miles. "Waiting for you." I lowered my brows and tilted my head at him. "Me? What do you need me for?" Z-Dog stood with her arms crossed and grinned at Lyle. Miles looked down at me with a similar grin, his hands resting on his hips. "Well, you're about to find out."
"You have to LISTEN to me this time," I hissed. "You all will die if you act the way you did last time I tried to teach you." I spoke quietly but firmly towards the others as we crouched behind several boulders from behind a roaring waterfall. "Yeah," Lyle spoke from beside Miles as he loaded a dart gun and snapped it into place. "Good thing we're just viewers." I turned my head to see him nodding at Miles, lifting his arms to hand him the gun. I'm only teaching him, I realized. I peered over and then reached across Miles to smack the gun out of his hand. "Oh m-put that down!" I snapped. Miles turned his head and widened his eyes at me. "You are not using that," I spat. "Then what am I supposed to do?" "Listen to me." I explained to them what to expect and reminded Miles that the banshee would choose him to be its rider. "Then what? I wait for it to give me a handshake or something?" Miles asked as he stared at the waterfall while several banshees flew past our cave entrance. "It will try to kill you."
"Fantastic," Miles grunted under his breath as we stood up and inched our way towards the waterfall from the sides of the cave. I lead with Miles behind me, the rest trailing in a single file behind him. I stopped and turned around once we stood beside the waterfall and onto the mossy stone of its path. It was broken down into a thin line of rock that was still connected to the wall. I motioned to continue and we slowly walked across, one foot in front of the other with one of hands on the wall. The loud shrieks and vocalizations from the banshees became louder as we crept towards their spot on the cliff. Once we stood on the solid ground, I turned to Miles. "Remember, it will choose you. You need to pay close attention." He looked down and inhaled deeply as he squatted down in front of me. "Yeah, well, considering the fact that it wants to kill me, I think I'll be paying close attention." I crossed my arms and rolled my eyes as he walked past me and towards the banshees with his hands cautiously held out at his sides. I turned around to face the others and took a deep breath. I turned back to see him in front of the banshees, waiting for one to come at him with his tail swaying from side to side. He really does look fearless. We all waited in silence until one of the banshees in the back stood up and started to move towards Miles.
This was it. The banshee started to creep closer and let out a piercing scream that revealed its sharp teeth and was followed with a hiss. Miles hissed back and backed up with his arms outstretched. In only a matter of seconds, the banshee took off towards Miles, swinging around to snap at him. "Now Miles!" I screamed from our position and held out my braid, but Miles was too busy dodging bites and attacks to notice. He threw a punch at the banshee, slamming his fist into the side of its head which only gave it more of a reason to want to kill him. I stepped a foot closer, my ears pointed upwards as I watched him. The banshee stumbled over and shrieked as it lunged at Miles again. This time Miles leaped up and grabbed onto its neck, his body getting whipped around as he held onto it. The banshee went crazy. It spread its wings out and whipped its body around, its neck being pulled back by Miles. It shrieked and fell over, rolling the two of them off the side of the cliff.
"Miles!" I screamed and took off, running towards the cliff to look down. Nothing. My eyes darted from one place to the next, but I could see nothing except for clouds and fog. The others ran after me and looked down but Miles and the banshee were nowhere to be heard or seen. I was about to run back down to the cave when I heard the beats of wings coming from below. We all stood and listened. Instantly, the banshee flew up above us, the sudden wind hitting us in the face. I held my hand over my eyes and looked up, a grin spreading across my face. The banshee hovered in the air, Miles controlling it with one arm while he raised his other in a fist. "That's right!" He called and circled over us before landing. Lyle scoffed from behind us but smiled. "What a show-off." I nodded and turned to see Miles walking towards me.
"So how did I do?" He asked as he stood over me. I looked down and laughed before looking back up into his eyes. "You did awful." He held his hands out in front of him defensively and looked down at me, his cold yellow eyes following my face. I smiled and quickly looked away, turning around to whistle as another banshee shot up from below the waterfall and landed beside me, rumbling a purr and gently nudging my arm from behind. "Here. Now I can teach you how to properly ride." I held my arms out and my banshee rested her head against my chest as I pet her and connected our bond. "That is if you can keep up, Colonel Miles Quaritch." I whispered as I hopped onto my banshee and soared down the cliff. I didn't even look behind me. I didn't have to. I leaned my body back to lay down and rested on my banshee as we flew. Oh how I missed this, I said to myself, reaching out my arm to pet my banshee as we flew. I closed my eyes, listening to the whistle of air passing by as it blew gently through my hair. Soon, the wind wasn't the only sound being heard. I let a little smile cover my face as I heard another set of wingbeats trailing behind me.
