CHAPTER 6
SELENE'S POV
"Excuse me."
I left the information desk and went to sit outside the OR, holding my cellphone tightly as I waited anxiously. After a while, the two doctors finally came out of the OR and looked for the patients' closest relative.
Kaagad akong tumayo at nagpakilala. "I'm their niece, Doc. Kamusta po ang Tito at Tita ko?"
The doctor on the left let out a sigh of relief. "Good thing Mr. Camacho managed to stay awake while waiting for rescue. However, there's a slight complication in his head due to the strong impact of the collision between the truck and their car. It's minor, but he may still experience temporary memory loss because of it. Aside from that, his left arm bone was damaged, but don't worry, we were able to address it properly. He will be transferred to a private room for monitoring."
I let out a relieved breath. "Thank God. Thank you, Doc," I said, nodding gratefully at the doctor. My attention then turned to Doc Gavin, whom I knew well as he was the doctor that my Tita often consulted, with me by her side. He was also a friend of my Tita.
"How about my Tita Janice, Doc Gavin? Is she okay?" I asked, feeling the anxiety creeping back.
Doc Gavin let out a heavy breath, and I knew in an instant that it wasn't good news. "She's not okay, Selene. Aside from the strong impact of the collision between the truck and their car, the side of the car where Janice was sitting hit a post. Her head hit the window hard, causing her to lose consciousness. When they arrived here, Janice wasn't breathing. Your Tita has a weak heart, Selene, and she has a lung disease, which made it difficult for her to survive. After many attempts to revive her, she finally responded. She flat-lined several times during the operation, but it was a success. However, that doesn't mean that she's okay now."
"Why, Doc? What happened?" I asked, my voice shaking with worry.
"We both know that Janice's heart is very weak. I can assure you that while she's under monitoring, she may flatline again," Doc Gavin said, letting out a heavy breath. I could feel his struggle in delivering the news because of his friend's condition. "What I mean is, we need a heart transplant. You have to find a healthy heart transplant for her. We don't know how long her heart will last. Even as her doctor, I don't know for how long her heart will continue to beat due to its extreme weakness. We need a transplant as soon as possible. And while you search for a heart transplant, we will transfer Janice to the ICU for monitoring. Don't worry, I'll take good care of her."
As I saw my Tita hooked up to machines, fear crept in. My Tita and Tito were the only ones I had left. They were my only family, and I didn't know what I would do if I lost them both.
My Tita had always been good to me. She treated me like her own daughter. And my Tito, although he would often curse and say hurtful words to me, I still didn't want to lose him. Aside from cursing and speaking harshly to me, he did nothing but support me in pursuing the college course I wanted.
