Chapter 2

Damien walked passed the crowds of the teenagers in his senior year. In the corner of his eyes, he could see the same girl watching him, watching his every step.

What was her name?’ he wondered to himself. ‘Oh yes, Carmina Greyy.’

He looked around for Zack, the only friend he had made that day. He looked towards Zack’s locker, locker number 136. There he was, stuffing a black, leather jacket into his locker. Damien shouted Zack’s name out, to get his attention. Zack looked back at Damien and smiled. Damien smiled at Zack but his thoughts were in another world. Before he realized it, Zack was beside him saying something.

“Earth to Damien. You hangin’ in there, bro?” asked Zack, bursting in to laughter.

“Oh, hey. Didn’t see you there,” Damien answered back, embarrassed.

“You gonna eat?” Zack questioned Damien. Damien shook his head, still twisted in his thoughts about Carmina.

“Well, I am, starving like hell,” Zack admitted, rubbing his tummy. “You sure, bro? On me”

“yeh I’m alright,” replied Damien.

When they arrived at the canteen, they noticed that it was almost empty, although there were five or six students huddling together in a corner. Damien looked around the canteen. He looked around and to his right, there was the hot-food bar which was completely empty. Next to that, he saw the cold-food bar. In the center of the room, there were neat rows of empty tables.

Damien looked behind at Zack telling him he was going to wait at one of the empty tables to. Watching Zack walking towards the hot-food bar, he made his way to the closest table he could find.

A few seconds after he had settled down at the table, he looked behind to the door, where a crowd of girls charged in, laughing and hooting.  He moved his eyes, looking for the girl he saw earlier that day. There she was, looking perfect like she did that morning, though she looked like she was dozed out into another world.

He quickly turned away, realizing one of her friends was looking at him. He looked up; Zack was walking towards him with a pizza box in one hand and a bitten pizza in the other.

“Man, food tastes great when you’re starving,” Zack said as he dumped his bag on the floor and sat down on the chair opposite to Damien.  Immediately Zacks’ words reminded him of the times he had with his mother.  He shook the thought away, knowing it would bring tears to his eyes any minute later.

“So what do you have next?” Zack asked him. “Art,” replied Damien.

“Yeh, me too.  Let’s go otherwise we’ll be late. I wouldn’t have been bothered but you’ll understand when you meet the teacher. She is horrible,” Zack said.

They stood up, starting towards the door when a red-headed girl stepped into Damiens path with bright blue eyes.

Oh great, Damien thought to himself.

“Hi, I’m Margaret Cooper. Is today your first day at school?” She asked, raising her eyebrows even though she probably knew.

“Err, yeh. I’m Damien Black. Very nice to meet you,” Damien replied, not knowing where this conversation was actually going.

Her eyes travelled along to Zack, giving him a wide smile.

“We’ve got art next. Don’t wanna be late now, do we?” She asked him, the same look in her eyes as Zack had when he talked about art.

“Oh yeh, Damien has art with us as well,” Zack answered back, typing something into his phone.

“Mind if I tag along?” She asked both of us, looking at Zack then at Damien.

They both shook their heads together. They made their way to art whilst Margaret told Damien the reason why everyone hated the art teacher. He smiled at the enthusiasm Margarets’ voice held as she told Damien how mean the art teacher, Miss Quell, was to everyone.

“I mean, what did we ever do to her? She gives us detention if we’re 1 minute late. Never mind one minute, one second!” Margaret told Damien, with wide eyes.

Damien knew that in the future Margaret would actually be a good friend to him. How easy it was to talk to her about what he thought, and the way she understood.

Just as Damien was going to reply to a question Margaret had asked, he heard a voice snap right in front of him.

“You are five minutes late, children. Margaret! Zack! I don’t expect this from you, seeing as you have 4 lessons with me a week!” boomed a lady, who probably was Miss Quell. “And this must be the new student, Damien Black. Well, since this is your first lesson of art with me, let me make this very clear. Never come to my lesson late or else there will be severe consequences.”

Vampires have a lot powers and charming people is one of them. Damien looked up at Miss quell, making eye contact with her. Maybe for too long, but oh well.

“Well, now that I know what an awesome teacher I have, I can assure you I won’t make this mistake again,” He told her, giving her a smile that always won people over to his side. He then looked at Margaret giving her a wink.

“Oh, cheeky,” replied Miss Quell, flattered with the compliment he had given her.

She turned around and walked into the classroom, to her desk, where all the other students were waiting quietly for the lesson to begin.

“Don’t go too far up her bum, you might suffocate,” joked Margaret. Damien stuck his tongue out at her and they made their way up to their seats.

He looked around at the students, trying to find the girl he couldn’t stop thinking about. Disappointment flooded through him as he couldn’t find her. Just as he was about to give up looking for her, she walked through the door towards him but stopped in her tracks when Miss Quell called her over with anger in her voice.

She looked at Margaret rolling her eyes and turned around walking towards the desk.

Damien watched her muttering quietly to Miss Quell, and since he had excellent hearing, he knew exactly why she was late. Apparently, she was with the headmaster because an incident had happened at home.

He realized that he was looking at her for too long. He looked at Margaret to see if she had noticed and the way she was looking at him with her teasing eyes, he was 100 percent sure she did.

He looked at Zack to start a conversation so Margaret would forget, but he had the same ‘I caught you staring at her’ look on his face.

Zack opened his mouth to say something but Miss Quell told everyone that she was going to pair everyone up for a project.

‘Thank you. You just saved me form embarrassment,’ Damien mentally told Miss Quell in his head.

Relief flood through him and he knew that this was a mistake that he would never make again or else Miss Quell probably wouldn’t be there to save him.

He made a mental not to himself to never stare at someone for too long.

“Ok, all males line up at my desk in a minute. You will pick out a name from this hat, and she will be your partner for this project,” Miss Quell said, holding a hat in her hand.

Damien stood up and stood waiting at the line. Two boring minutes later, it was his turn to pick out a name. He looked at the small sheet and it read,

Carmina Greyy
