Friday came and the second I walked into Tim's house I knew something was off. Trevor was crying loudly and Tim came to meet me at the front door, holding Trevor in his arms.
"What's going on?" I asked and as soon as Trevor heard me he reached for me.
"I don't want to go. Please don't make me go." Trevor locked his arms around my neck and I hugged him against me. I looked up at Tim, unsure what to say. It wasn't my call to make him go or not.
"Why don't you want to go, buddy?" I asked him as I rubbed circles on his back. He kept crying but it wasn't as loud as before.
"What if you need Ninja Turtles or my pillow? Who are you going to read books to at night and who will you play with all weekend long? What if Dad forgets how to love you and you leave?" There it was finally. He was upset because he loved me and didn't want me to leave. I placed one hand under Trevor, holding him up and then I reached for Tim's hand. I led them both to the living room and we sat down on the couch. When I sat down Trevor didn't release my neck and when I tried to puch him back a little so I could see his face he cried harder.
"Alright, calm down." I rubbed circles on his back again and let him calm down on his own. A few minutes later he was better, only gasping for breaths every few seconds as he worked on calming himself down. Tim was holding my hand tight, clearly concerned for his son.
"Can we talk now, Trevor?" I tickled his side and he moved a little, looking up at me.
"I guess." His bottom lip was sticking out and I couldn't help but smile.
"Do you think that if you leave to see your mom for the weekend that I won't be here when you get back?" Trevor looked from me to Tim and back like I'd figured out his big secret.
He nodded his head yes.
"Trevor, I'm not going to leave you just because your going to see your mom. You don't have to worry about me leaving. I love you and your dad and I'll make sure he doesn't forget how to love me."
"Why do I have to go see her? I don't want to go."
"She's your mom and she misses you." Trevor didn't like that answer because he looked like he suddenly started sucking on something sour.
"Why can't you be my mom?" Tim froze and so did I. I looked at him and then to Tim, looking for help.
"Buddy, Davis and I aren't... married. She loves you and she isn't going to leave us. It will just take some time before Davis is here more... often" Tim was clearly looking for the right words as well as words that didn't scare me.
"I promise you I'll be here when you get home." Trevor wiped his face and hugged me tight again.
"Take care of Dad. I told him what toys you like to play and some other movies you like to watch. Will you call me if you get bored?" I laughed and told him I'd call.
He moved to Tim's lap next, giving him a hug too. Tim told him to go get dressed, leaving us alone in the living room.
"You realize you can't leave us now, not even if you wanted to, right?" He smiled and I smiled back.
"That's good because I don't want to leave. I'm ready, remember?" Tim leaned in and kissed me, taking my breath away. He pulled back a minute later, pressing his forehead against mine.
"Thank you for loving Trevor."
"Of course. What's not to love?"
Tim told me that he'd talked to Michelle this morning, telling her he wouldn't be home at four o'clock when she was to pick up Trevor but that I would be. Tim said she didn't say anything about me being here but she hung up shortly after, saying whatever. I was even more anxious now but I'd stay strong for Trevor.
