I was planning on telling Sammy about me and Jake at his dinner. He deserved to know. Jake might have already told him but I wanted him to hear it from me, too. I didn't really know if Josh knew or not but he always had a way of figuring things out before people told him.

I felt sick. I didn't know how Sammy would take it. I mean, he had seemed encouraging but now that it was actually kind of happening he might react differently.

I had gotten off work a half hour early, heading towards the grocery store to buy all the ingredients for Sammy's stuffed peppers. I decided to give him a call in case I was forgetting anything.

"Hey, what's up?" he answered.

"I'm heading to the grocery store to get stuff for your dinner," I told him.

"Uh, I can't tonight."

"Why not? I thought you said you wanted to."

"I have a date."

"What? Since when? You didn't have one this morning. Sammy, that's shitty. We already had plans."

"Well I forgot I had this date. I planned it a long time ago."

"You didn't even tell me you were going back on any dating apps! What the hell, Sammy?"

"It's new."

"Maybe I should sign up again."

"What? No! You and Jake are getting along great."

"Did he say something to you?"

"Yeah. I know you guys have been hanging out."

"Oh. Right."

"Was there more?"

"Well what else did Jake tell you?"

"He just said that you guys got lunch and you're being really nice to him. He seems happy."

"Oh. Well that's good, I guess."

"It's nice to see him in a better mood."

"Listen, I'm right around the corner from your house. I can pop by just for a few minutes before your date. I don't have to go to the grocery store."

"I'm not at home."

"Are you on the date right now?"

"Kinda."

"Sammy!"

"I don't think she minds."

"Please tell me it wasn't tinder."

"It wasn't tinder."

"Bumble?"

"Mountain of the Fun Club."

"What?"

"It's Laney. I'm on a date with Laney."

"Laney? Like Jake's Laney?"

"She isn't Jake's Laney."

"She acts like she is. Sammy, what if she's just using you to get to Jake?"

"She isn't," he said, his tone sounding a little too harsh for my liking.

"Listen. I love you and I don't want to see you get hurt. That girl is in love with Jake. I can see it. You know I know what to look for."

I hated being so open about that. I was still trying to hide how I felt about Jake but I knew Sammy wouldn't care that much. He had to have known.

"Let me make this decision for myself, okay?" Sammy spat.
