"What the hell is going on here?" Sam asked, staring between the two of us.

"I'm making Lena oatmeal," Jake said.

"Why?" Sam spat.

"Because we've been running around all day and she hasn't eaten anything yet."

"After everything? You still wanna hang out with her? What is wrong with you?"

"Hey!" Jake yelled.

I could hear him stepping closer to me. He placed a kiss on the top of my head then bent down to my ear.

"Don't listen to him," he whispered.

"I just don't understand it. I mean, she's ignored you for six years and now all of a sudden you're making her oatmeal?" Sam complained.

"Yeah, you don't get it, Sam," Jake said, shrugging his shoulders.

"So explain it to me. I wanna know why all of a sudden once it's convenient for her she just decides to forgive you," Sam ordered.

"That sounds like a question for Lena. I mean, I can explain my side of it but Lena's side is probably different," Jake pointed out.

"Lena?" Sam asked.

"I don't know! He stopped acting like I didn't exist. I was around him more and he was being so nice to me. It's hard not to-"

"Okay. I get it. I'm sorry. I'm not that mad. I'm just confused," Sam went on.

"Sam, you said some pretty fucked up things to her last night," Jake said.

"I know. I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me," Sammy began.

"It's okay, Sam-" I said.

"It's not okay, Lena. I mean, words hurt. That whole saying sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me? It's bullshit. I can't stand around and watch you and Laney calling the woman I lo-" Jake cut himself off.

I sat up, feeling my cheeks burn. He loved me? It was too soon for that. It was definitely too soon for that. I forced myself to move past it.

"You love her?" Sammy asked.

"I always have, Sam. I've tried to make it go away. It just won't. It's-"

"It's a lot," I whispered.

"Oh. No, Lena, I didn't- It's not- I-" Jake stuttered.

"I'm sorry. I think maybe I should head home," I told Jake.

"We didn't-"

"I'll take you," Sammy offered.

I stood up and followed him towards the door.

"Hey," Jake cooed as he grabbed my hand.

I looked up at him, waiting for him to go on.

"I still had more planned," Jake explained.

"Maybe we can save it for the next time," I suggested.

"Can I take you home at least?" Jake asked.

"Um..." I trailed off, looking over at Sammy.

"I have some stuff I actually need to talk to her about," Sammy said.

"Okay," Jake said, his tone sounding defeated.

I don't know. I felt kind of bad for him but I was still uncomfortable by what he said. I didn't feel it yet.

I got into the car and buckled up. Sammy put on his sunglasses and found a playlist that we would both enjoy.

"Where's your car?" I asked.
